very vintage dooney question

i have a crescent sac bag. the duck patch is fraying very slightly at one spot. it is otherwise intact, if somewhat weather-beaten, and definitely sewn in place.

? is: does anyone have any idea how the outermost edges of the patches on these bags (the outermost edge, beyond the stitching)--were originally sealed?

am thinking maybe a very thin line of glue? or some kind of wax?

I read a product called Edgekote does the job of resealing edges. Google should come up with where it's available.
