Loving my Senreve midi maestra in vegan pecan. The price is the same with actual leather, but i think its worth it, considering they have to replicate similar texture and quality. Also it is priceless for saving life of an animal.

I know it could be an unpopular opinion here but i just want to promote the trend of buying vegan.

whats your vegan buy?
p.s. Stella McCartney bags are on my rad

I'm currently learning more about the process of vegan leather and am unconvinced that it is better for the environment or for animal welfare. Vegan leather is plastic, after all. There's a lot of greenwashing around the subject of all things vegan and sustainability, so I'm really having to dig for information to make better personal choices.

I am a fan of alternative leathers (pineapple and mushroom) thus far, as they seem to do little damage to our planet and are sustainable.
I'm still studying about using recycled plastics and nylon and am unsure if they are truly better for our planet (since the process of breaking down plastic and refurbishing it into fabric is itself bad for the environment).

I'll be following this thread with interest and am hoping to learn from our members who are far more knowledgeable than myself.

With the exception of those vegan ”leather” bags that are made from plants, producing vegan leather is a chemical/industrial process. And its final product is neither biodegradable nor especially environmentally friendly.

That being said, choosing a bag based on your personal beliefs is never a bad thing.

No further justification is necessary.

I’ve seen material made from cactus, grape, and apple as well. I actually bought a pair of Cactus material heels from Bohema clothing. I’m a desert dweller, so am interested to see how they hold up, even though it’ll be awhile before they get worn on any type of frequency.

Oh how exciting! I hadn't heard of these before and have only seen pineapple leather IRL (it felt papery but was very strong). I'll look into these other options, thank you so much for sharing!
Your cactus heels sound really cool! :flowers:

Thanks! Cactus has a good tactile feel. I’m not sure how it’s processed, but nopales is very chewy to eat, which makes me optimistic about it’s durability potential while still being biodegradable. There is a bag by Marco Trevisan made of the same material that I’m eyeing.

I believe Karl Lagerfeld has a line with it too. I’m excited to see designers expanding their material line up.

I understand your point. It is normal that synthetics might cause more pollution/ carbon footprint although some pointed out leather products could also be causing our environment ( please see the graph and website as attached) AND the lives of the animals.

I am no expert in textile industry, simply want to reduce use of leather products. The higher the demand of leather products, higher chance of animal being skinned for our accessories.
Similar to my kill-less wish, I would say I also would like to going more to the vegan/ vegetarian side. Maybe to start with a few days in a month.
