Using the Nikki for university?

Thank you so much. I think I may have to look elsewhere than RM :sad: I will think about it. Thanks for your help.

I would still like to know from anyone who has the regular devoted?

Like I said-I don't think it will work. I have a macbook and a devote and it just doesn't fit well.

I really think the Knocked Up bag (which looks like a MAB but bigger) or maybe a regular Beloved are your only RM options.

I agree with pinkboudoir, I would be worried about putting that much weight into any RM. I don't think they are meant to handle that kind of weight on a regular basis. Just my two cents.

get a lesportsac or a longchamp for school, thats what i use! however, i am an english major so on days where i have english lectures i use my mab, i can fit to novels easily (not heavy at all) pens, highlighters, water bottle, the usual junk.. then hold my notebook.

I personally wouldn't. But when I was in university, I was so stressed about getting all my labs done and finding time to study...looking pretty was never part of the equation. And I had to carry around so many textbooks the Nikki wouldn't have been able to handle the weight and it would hurt my shoulder. I carried a good 'ol Jansport backpack the whole time :smile:

I agree with Blackbirdie. I'm in grad school, and I always end up with more to carry than I anticipate. On a daily basis I use a Targus backpack, and on day where I really don't need more than my laptop, planner, and regular purse stuff, I use a Mobile Edge microfiber laptop tote. I miss my handbags on the weekdays, but for me it's just not practical (and I would cry if the weight of my stuff destroyed a handbag!)

i agree with most of the other members here that you probably don't want to use an RM in this case. mabs can fit textbooks, maybe even a netbook but i think it will really weigh down the bag. RM's are imo a bit on the heavy side when empty for a typical leather bag b/c of how rich and thick the leather is plus the hardware. that said, i'm sure it could take a lot of heavy items but i think of a nikki or mab as more of a work or leisure bag or for travel but not to carry textbooks and laptops. i would prefer to get a laptop bag or case just to protect my laptop better in case it gets bumped by someone else and also b/c i don't want to risk it getting damaged. this sounds really anal but i would also worry about someone accidentally spilling coffee or food on my RM if i brought it into lectures/classes.

that said, RM made a laptop case and a briefcase(?) that might work better for your purpose. i think there are also a lot of other bags out there specifically made to handle laptops and textbooks that would be more comfortable and safer for the contents. i also dont like that the nikki doesnt zip shut cuz i'm worried i'll drop or lose something.

maybe you could get a going out bag by RM instead? i'm thinking a mac, rocker, or lover's clutch? if you really love the nikki, mab, or devote style, then i say you should still get it and enjoy using it! just maybe try to hold off with loading it with tons of books or your laptop and use it on days when you won't need everything to take with you. i've seen some pics of mabs where the handles really stretch out and the bag loses its shape. i think it's nice to seen a worn in bag, but it makes me think that RM's just aren't made to be loaded with books like that.

You can also buy the Steady too, it may also fit in a laptop and some textbooks. The only problem is that the closure is flat and magnetic so your books and laptop will stick out a little bit, and the flaps would have to stay open. I just tried putting one of my heavier books in there along with a pencil pouch and my RM clutch and it's fine.... though a bit heavy. ^^;

The knocked up bag is an awesome school bag!! That, or get the Cotton Eco Bread and Wine tote from ShopDressOnline (it's $99, but you can get it for slightly less for the BF discount). It would work well as a school bag too.
