I only have one metallic bag but it’s a favorite, my copper Zoe 12669. I have read posts by other TPFers about peeling, rubbing, and various problems with metallic leathers (including the copper Zoe) but I was very happy that I never had any wear issues with my beloved bag – until this year!

I only wear Zoe during the fall, but life has recently gotten harder on my bags (and on me!) and my sweet Zoe was damaged! My bags are spending a lot more time on my shoulder and rubbing against my clothes – instead of sitting next to me in the car – because I am now walking back and forth to commuter train stations to go to and from work.

As a result, areas of metallic leather on the back side of my Zoe rubbed off and really looked terrible! I finally decided to try over-painting the damaged areas. I usually only use acrylic paints to touch up the strap edges on rehabbed vintage bags. I’ve never had much luck over-painting areas on the body of a bag. It is very hard to match colors exactly and even harder to match the (matt or glossy) finish of the bag.

I now think that metallic paints may be a good option for damaged metallic bags because of the natural color variations in metallics and the fact that both the bags and the paints have a glossy finish.

I took Zoe’s hangtag with me to JoAnn’s and found a small bottle of metallic acrylic paint that was a very close color match. Then I just painted it on and hoped for the best! My goal was to minimize the damage and make it less noticeable and I am satisfied that I’ve accomplished that.

I don’t think that I will ever use Zoe as an everyday work bag again, but I will take her out for special occasions next fall and I am glad that she is not lost forever!

Below are some before pics and I will post after photos with the next message. It’s hard to photograph the true colors of metallic bags, so these are the best pics I could get.

Please don’t praise my rehab skills because I didn’t have to use much skill, just nerve! This was more of an act of desperation! I just bought a small bottle of paint and slathered it on with an artist’s paint brush and let it dry.

I am only posting this info because I know that others have had issues with metallic bags and this may help someone else.

Before, poor Zoe!

Here are the after pics, I had to use two coats to cover the damage, but Zoe is now looking much better! It looks like there are some spots of damage on the upper left part of the bag, but that that is just the light.

Fantastic job. I have used acrylic paints to camouflage a peeled spot in a crinkled patent stripe. You can still see the damage if you look closely but it looks a lot better than the light color that was exposed.
I have been looking at vintage bags after looking at your great work, and a lot of them have ink marks. What are the chances that I would be able to clean these off or camouflage them? Thanks

Thanks! Ink marks are almost impossible to remove, sometimes you can lighten them but you risk taking some of the color out of the bag in that spot. And as I mentioned it is hard to sucessfully over-paint glove-tanned bags. When it is a dark-colored bag or the marks are on the inside it's not so bad. I usually pass on lighter-colored bags with bad marks on the exterior.

wow that is awesome!! can't even tell through the pics! good to know that your Zoe isn't gone!

Me too! I tried to tell myself that since all the damage was on the back side, I could still carry her - but I just wasn't happy with her appearance. I am glad that now she can still be a part of my purse wardrobe, because the rest of the bag is in great condition.

WOW. That paint reeeeally did the job! I know that feeling of desperation you had-- I experienced the same thing when my cobalt patent sabrina got a small tear/flap (very small) on the front of the bag. I used some super-glue (I know, but desperate times called for desperate measures!) and used some pins to hold the tiny teared flap of patent onto the bag until the glue set, and then it was like new. I was SO relieved. YOU must have been so relieved when your beloved Zoe turned out so well! I'm so glad for you.

I will definitely keep this thread in mind if anything ever happens to my dear copper Claire. I love that bag and it's so useful, but I'm always on the lookout for color loss (assuming it will happen eventually). And someday when it does happen, I'll know to head to Joanns! Thanks!

I'm so glad that you were able to save your cobalt patent sabrina, good for you! I'll remember that if I ever have a tear in a patent bag and keep an eye on your copper claire!

Desperate measures is exactly the correct term! My copper Zoe looked great everywhere else but the back side looked really bad - and I sure wasn't ready to give her up. I figured "what the heck, I may as well try paint, what do I have to lose?" I'm thrilled that it worked and happy that the glue worked for your sabrina! :sweatdrop:

Zoe looks so much better, I think the paint was a great idea. I don't buy many metallic bags because of the wear concern, but I'll keep this in mind as an option if ever needed.
