On a time crunch in Paris.

Can anyone please give thoughts about these two bags? Both vintage from the 50s (I think). I would be interested in ANY information including thoughts on these prices. My friend is in Paris and the shop will close in a couple of hours. I don't know if she can get back tomorrow or not. I am not a Dior or YSL person and could not help her.

THANK YOU!!!

YSL. Black, hard shell, gold color chain strap, flower clasp. $800 USD.

Dior. Black satin. $900

My personal thoughts, I think the YSL is more versatile and will hold up better than the Dior satin. The Dior is strictly an evening bag.

I love the flowers on the YSL also.

I have NO idea what to say about the prices. Great prices? Terrible prices? I seriously have no idea.

My friend is not a bag person and this is her first bag question she's ever presented to me. I want to be the font of knowledge she was expecting, but I have nothing to offer. Thank you for your quick input!

I don't think they're from the 50s, not at all. More like '90s or '00s

Without seeing the inside of the Dior, I would say Galliano era, and the minaudière looks quite Tom Ford for Yves Saint Laurent. We should ask @averagejoe and @cowgirlsboots who are experts on Dior

I think the prices are typical in Paris, Nice and tourist areas, not cheap, but not 1st Dibs either.

If it's Galliano for Dior and/or TF for YSL, they are still very collectable.

I agree with @papertiger . This is Galliano for Dior.

I definitely do not think this piece is worth $900. Several Galliano-era Dior evening bags sell for less than this.

YSL as a brand didn’t start until the early 1960s. That said, of the 2 bags I think the YSL is more interesting. The condition doesn’t look pristine (white flecks and a ding or depression). Agree these bags are way overpriced. If your friend wants to buy, she should offer 40% less to start. Good luck!

Sorry, I haven´t been online for a while... I´m caught up in life and a silly sewing project. The Dior certainly is Galliano for Dior. And it is expensive, but in the usual way things like this are in nice vintage shops in Paris.
I bought my Dior Diva boots in Paris a couple of years ago and after a lot of haggling still overpaid in my opinion. (But don´t regret buying them at all!) The original asking price was outragious... the seller needed a bit of persuasion and some explaining about the actual age, the state you can expect for top money etc... They fit me a treat and were definetely waiting for me... sometimes overpaying a bit is what you pay for the special experience.

Typical Paris prices. Way too expensive for a very poor condition. You pay for the experience of “finding fashion treasure in vintage Paris store” when in reality you wouldn’t pay as much for it in any other store.
I know that feeling though as I bought soooo much antique furniture at these stores, half of my house is furnished from the paris antiquities.

Hello there!

Based on the descriptions you provided, both bags sound intriguing, especially if they are authentic vintage pieces from the 1950s. Here are my thoughts:

  1. YSL Black Hard Shell Bag: The YSL bag with a black hard shell and a gold-colored chain strap seems like a classic and elegant choice. The flower clasp adds a touch of femininity to the overall design. The price of $800 USD might be reasonable for a vintage YSL bag in good condition, but it's always essential to verify its authenticity and condition before making a purchase. If you has an eye for vintage fashion and loves iconic brands like YSL, this bag could be a fantastic addition to your collection.
  2. Dior Black Satin Bag: The Dior black satin bag also has its allure, with satin being a luxurious and glamorous fabric choice. The $900 USD price tag might reflect the exclusivity of a vintage Dior piece. However, as with any high-end vintage item, it's crucial to ensure its authenticity and condition. If you appreciate vintage fashion and has a soft spot for Dior's timeless elegance, this bag could be a captivating find.
