I got engaged in 2000, and married in late 2001. I have a 0.96/VS2/I-J round engagement ring in a simple platinum 6 prong setting.

Hubby wants to upgrade in the next 6 months or so. I don't want to downgrade in quality TOO much, but I do want at least 1.5 carats, possibly 1.75. My current stone is very sparkly and beautiful.

Would you downgrade at all in quality? If so, by how much (like down to K color, etc)

I can't decide if downgrading slightly in quality to increase size is worth it!

Thanks ladies!

Yes, I would get a lower color grade diamond for increased size, because size is more noticeable than color (unless the color is very, very low). However, for a ring, I would not go lower than a GIA graded "I" color. Some people who are less color sensitive may go down further to "J", but I do not advise to go any lower.

By the way, I am not sure you and I are talking about the same color grades. Not sure about the true color of your current diamond, because we may not be using the same color grading standard. For example, an EGL graded "I" may be equivalent to a GIA graded "K". The only two grading systems I trust are GIA and AGS.

I'd go with a J and see if you can get by with an SI1 clarity to make it work. Also look for stones with fluorescence, as that can present a cost savings. Don't skimp on cut quality. That's where the sparkle comes from. Let me know if I can be of any assistance as you select stones.
