Hi Ladies,
I recently went shopping for some pearl jewelry and came across a booth that had a GIA sign, so I asked the owner if they would buy GIA certified diamonds and he said YES. YEH!! Then I followed asking him if he would sell it for market price and he said YES to that also. He said to come back with diamond and certificate and I said fine.
However, I went home and though, maybe it's too good to be true.
Few jewelry stores before told me that sometimes when diamond are mounted and wants to be sold later, the quality changes? Ex. A VVS1 may become a V2 due to wear and she said something about the sides having scratches or chips. Hm...that doesn't make sense to me. Basically she's saying whatever quality of diamond we bought intially (GIA certified) might change later when we want to sell it back. Does that make sense girls?
Please share your knowledge and experience? I've always thought Diamonds are the hardest material there is?? I'm now very confused!!!

Also, if I want to sell, is it too good to be true that the seller will pay the market price of it (based on my GIA certificate quality)???? chime in plz..thx

Unless the diamond took an EXTREMELY hard hit directly on the girdle to chip it, there is no way on this earth that the clarity would change......I would stay FAR away from anyone that tells you that. A GIA report does not change.....period.....unless, like I said, the ring diamond took a direct hit and was chipped...if it ever was though, you would know.

As far as resale is concerned.....you need to figure out exact Rappaport pricing for your stone....that is wholesale.......now cut that wholesale amount in HALF and that is what a reseller will give you for it. I would be shocked if anyone gave you wholesale (Rap) pricing in cash for a diamond.

If you just want an upgrade, take the diamond back to the original jeweler you purchased it from because most reputable jewlers have an upgrade policy.

You will get more money for your diamond on an upgrade than selling it outright. You could always take your ring to an independent appraiser [not associated with selling diamonds or a jewelry store] and get some idea of its value.

You said the seller said he would "sell it at market price," not that he/she would "buy it" at market price. Of course it'll be sold at market price. No way would they pay you the same as the market price, for obvious reasons.

It sounds like you got a line of talk to run down the quality of your goods, which is what resellers sometimes do in order to beat you down on the price they'll pay. It doesn't have to be true; it just has to work. For your own protection, find outs its value and upgrade, if you can (as mentioned below).

Be very careful to see where your diamond goes, if it ever leaves your sight. There are many instances of switching stones--it's a famous hazard. GL!

I agree with Jellyv. The jeweller will sell at market price and he will give you a lower price.

At my own jeweller it is possible to trade in jewelry that I've bought at this store for the original price. However, customers will have to choose a jewelry piece that costs 150% of the original price. It's a great system for upgrades. If I bring jewelry that I've bought at another shop, I will get a much lower price.

As far as diamonds are concerned. The internal flaws does not change. It might be possible that the diamond is a bit damaged.
