I purchased a K25 in May at the boutique and I am trying to figure out when it was made. The stamp starts with a D and then followed by other letters and numbers. From what I have researched, the D means it was made in 2019. Is that unusual for a bag made in 2019 not to be sold until 3-4 years later? TIA!

Nope, not unusual. Stock shows up “late” rather often actually. I have seen even older items sold in the boutique. Hermès is weird.

So these bags have just been sitting around for years, yet they say nothing available? I don't understand this...lol
Well, sort of— Hermès is quite strategic with the quantity of items they make available. Instead of clearing stock each season/year, the company creates demand and exclusivity by limiting the amount of bags sold.

Paris sends out bags to stores in batches, and sometimes those batches arrive much later than expected. Other things that come into play are the size/amount of traffic in your boutique and the desirability of the specific combination you purchased. Certain colours and leathers historically sell slower than others. But simply put, yes, it is very likely that your bag sat in a stock room in Paris for years before arriving to your store.

I bought a Jypsière last year in-store from 2015! Just another one of the mysteries of Hermès. ;)

That's crazy! Thank you for all your insight!

Normal. There’s no expiration date on leather like a gallon of milk lol. I am sometimes very grateful that my SA has unearthed a treasure that I thought was long gone. Just this year, 30 rainbow bolide, a limited piece from several years ago, maybe 2018?

ETA: sorry, I haven’t looked for the exact date and just assumed years ago bc i thought that’s when it came out :)

Same here, I purchased the above bag THIS year, although mine is from 2021, so not quite as "old" . Still, I was grateful that it was still available.

Does it affect the leather to have sat so long in storage unused?

It’s likely the opposite really. Since the bags are not being opened or used, the leather is preserved. Remember, most bags (talking about quota bags) come from Paris in a cellophane wrapped box which limits the amount of air, dust, moisture, or microbes getting into that box. Granted, the boxes are not totally hermetically sealed or anything like that, but the cellophane should be enough to slow most of the aging or deterioration. Moreover, I am sure Hermès stock rooms are temp and humidity controlled to help maintain the condition of their pieces.

I bought a plume in 2021 that was made in 2016. I care about condition of the bag and not the date made so I rarely check date marks. I only checked the date on this bag because my SA mentioned it had been sitting in storage for awhile. She told me to inspect the bag thoroughly to be sure I was happy with condition before purchase. I see so few plumes these days that I wasn’t surprised to see an older date mark on this bag. The bag was in impeccable condition so it had been stored properly.
