I recently purchased an antique gold bracelet from 1stDibbs. It was a reasonably expensive item. The seller was in Sweden and shipped the bracelet via DHL.

The bracelet spent several days in NYC before it was shipped to me. I had to provide some personal information for Customs.

I receive the box. It was left on my front porch. I was supposed to sign for it. I was not at the front door to sign for it as the package was supposed to deliver from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

I examine the box. It was opened by DHL and repackaged. This immediately put me on my guard and I set up my phone and tablet to videotape me opening the box from two directions.

I open the box. I take out the bag with the fitted bracelet box. I open it. The box is EMPTY. Then I look through the packing peanuts and find the bracelet. Whew. Luckily it is undamaged.

I examine the bracelet box. It’s the kind that snaps tight. And you have to push the box clasp to open it. There is no way that it could have opened in transit.

Here’s what I believe happened.

Someone at DHL tried to steal the bracelet but was caught and threw the bracelet back on in the box and retaped the box sloppily. Perhaps the person was fired and that the box was held up for evidence so to speak.

I’ve had Customs open packages of mine in transit. It is always carefully repackaged with a note.

I recently had a VanCleef ring stolen in transit either by UPS or by TRR. That’s why I film myself from two directions if I have any inkling of trouble.

My question is has anyone had similar experiences? Should I inform 1stDibbs and DHL? I already reached out to the vendor.
