Turning 30. Treating self to new watch. Need recommendations!!!

So I'm turning 30 next month and decided to treat myself with a new watch because it's something that I actually really need. I haven't worn a watch for the last 6 years...a couple of years ago I bought a Seiko watch but it never worked properly despite having sent it in for repairs many times and then I just gave up out of frustration. I'm starting a new chapter in my life and I'll be heading into the business/corporate environment - which itself is really scary and nerve-wrecking to begin with - and I'm trying to put together a chic and sophisticated wardrobe to match my new profession.

I don't have that much money to spare but I see this as an investment that will last at least for the next 5 years and that being said, I'm looking for something high quality and classic in design but less than $500.

As far as design goes, I like ones with leather wristbands or stainless steel. Clock face can be round or rectangular and the dial should probably be white so it can be versatile and worn with many different outfits. I need to be able to read the time easily so really minimal dials with only 4 tick-marks will probably be a bad idea. Also, if it shows the date, that would be cool too.

I'm a petite female but I don't mind wearing slightly chunkier watches. I don't know that much about watches in general so I really need help and would love to hear your suggestions. I'm looking for something classic but preferably not too boring...(like, if it's a little retro, that's even better). I don't know!! AHH! Help? Thanks!!

P.S. And no, I don't want brands like Guess, BCBG, Burberry, DKNY, etc. that are being worn by every girl under 25. I want something that says, "okay, she's older now and has the taste to show for it."

I'm going to try to attach pictures of the watch I bought last night. I just love it! It's a Bulova and is well within your limits. It has a mother of pearl face and diamonds. It's very classy looking IRL and perfect for work. Not too small, but not huge. I actually found it on sale for $300. I'm very petite and my wrists are small, but I wanted something that looked a little substantial, but not overwhelming. I also wanted diamonds, easy to read, and I love mother of pearl. The model number is 96R56. I also put the amazon link here for you because it has some really good close-up pictures http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000PD64XE/interactiveda8014-20

Lovely watch, charlestonmom. I've always liked Bulova's diamond accent collection.

I used to wear the sturdy Victorinox Swiss Army and Wenger Swiss Army steel watches when I worked in the corporate world. I preferred them with the black face; projects conservative business image but not boring.

Thanks! I love swiss army watches. I have one that I wear on the weekends and it's one of my favorites!

I know when I was picking this new one, I didn't want to spend much because I usually wear yellow gold and I have a two tone and a yellow gold one already which are higher end. I wanted to be sure I would love stainless steel and diamonds, but I do!

Anyway - you sure can't go wrong with Swiss Army. I think they are darling. They make some nice dive watches too!
