I see lot of you talk about taking pieces to trusted jeweler, to have test, maybe reset something, appraise. How do you pick trusted jeweler if you don't know one (no family friend)? What type of thing do you go to trusted jeweler for?

i usually go to places family recommends. DH's best friend's dad is a jeweller in Toronto and my ring is from him and he has also made me a few other pieces. i also buy things when i travel and u can always google a jeweler, put a request on here for recommendations and also u get a sense of the place when u go in. how organized it looks, other cliens, location, etc. in NYC i go to the diamond district and i looked up vendor websites first. also chekc for accridations on the site- bbb, jeweler associations etc.

i go to trusted jewelers for new pieces, apraisals, and havig things sized. when in doubt i look for a big name- ie birks always does my apraisals.

Well, I found mine by taking in repair work. I went to 3-5 different places before I found someone that did good work, could understand my needs and what I was trying to accomplish.
Then I purchased some jewelry from that place and have received consistant excellent service from them. I no longer purchase expensive pieces from them because they discontinued their layaway plan, but I do take my repairs to them.

No matter where I live, I'm like a heat-seeking missle when it comes to finding a reputable jeweler. I have gone in to see what type of merchandise they carry and if I can strike up a conversation with the owner/SA and feel comfortable, then I'll give them a go. I did that when we moved to our current location and I have been working for them part-time for almost 9 years now.......I love my jewels. (BTW, had no prior experience in the field but just a love for the goods.)

I deal with a couple of small local jewellers. It's all about the vibe and the professionalism. Also how well you express yourself as the customer - you need to be clear about what you want, then they can either accommodate you or they can't. I tend to have very good outcomes and I've commissioned a number of pieces.

Ask around and see who gets recommended. Good jewelers are typically small, family owned enterprises that have been in business for quite awhile. Trust your judgement of people - that's really important too.
