What exactly is the difference between the two of them? I've heard of both and seen both at stores, but can't fully grasp the difference. They both seem like basically the same thing?

Well, an astringent tends to contain alcohol and it is meant more for oilier skin so it removes oil and mattifies the complexion. A toner is usually meant for dry to normal skin and it usually removes dead skin cells/unclogs the pores. They are similar products in that they tighten the pores but from my understanding, astringent is meant to remove oil.

^^^^exactly what I was going to say. Astringent=alcohol in it, stronger, drying. Toner=different types but usually for normal/dry/sensitive skin; should have no alcohol.
