I own one of these in camel leather. It is indeed the original Eight bag. I live in the UK, but I bought mine in Florida. The retail price was in the region of $1800, although i can't recall whether that was before or after sales tax Periodically i attempt to find some background info, but I haven't had much success. I do remember that it was a celebrity must-have at the time and that the Eight moniker related to the eight panels - four on each side.

I meant to add that there was also a mini version. I can't tell from the photo you've posted which one it is you're referring to as they were identical in every respect other than size.
