Hello! I'm very excited my boyfriend and I plan to be engaged soon. But... the ring search is taking way longer than I expected. I'm set on a small Tiffany setting, so there's no convincing me otherwise! However I'd still like to get an ideal cut stone that looks great. I was surprised at the variety of less than perfect cuts and even the variety of setting differences I found at Tiffany these days. Earlier this month we were in the store deciding between two rings in our specified range, but to be honest I wasn't into either of them. One had supposedly bad angles (almost 4 on the HCA scale when it should be less than 2) and the other one had a clunky and slightly uneven setting. We bought the one with the better cut, but after looking at it with a loupe I bought I can see the table and girdle aren't parallel! We decided to return it and I think the SA is a little upset at me. He said he'd be happy to help me find additional options, and would send a list by email. It's been almost a week and he hasn't contacted me again so I wonder if his "It's no problem" email was just lipservice and he's expecting me to disappear. I think the main reason is because it's a small ring for Tiffany's and maybe he doesn't see me as worth his extra effort as a client. Also I'm not sure he can even check the diamond database since he's pretty new. In the store he couldnt look through it on the computer in front of me and had to go to the manager's office. What I wouldn't do to access that database myself!

Should I try to contact a new SA? Actually before the purchase I tried calling to get some additional available rings. The lady on the service line was short with me and said she'd look and call me back in an hour. 2 hours later I politely called to ask if she had found anything yet in my specifications. It was kinda obvious she hadn't looked at all, but she did a quick search and told me about 1 ring. I asked for the SKU to see if it was the same as to one my SA had found but she said she couldnt tell me SKUs (why?) and kinda berated me for going above my SA's head. She told me she'd forward the info to the SA and ended the call.

I'm disappointed at the quality and service I've experienced so far, but I look and sound like a pushover so it's nothing new to me. I like authentic designs and history so I'm just ignoring the bad stuff and won't give up. Does anyone have some good suggestions/emails for sales associates in the tri-city area I could contact? I'm about 2 hours away from the New York area so I've been considering the flagship store instead.

I'm not sure if they've upgraded their system in the six years since i got my final upgrade but back then the computer system was extremely slow and tedious. My SA also would not allow me to look over her shoulder while she searched and seemed secretive about the process. When I did catch a glimpse, it was basically a black and white prompt screen that just showed the four Cs and price. Some times she could click on that and get the full stats certificate and other times that was unavailable.

Are you requesting stats that don't match up with your budget perhaps? As a silly example, if someone is asking for a five carat IF D color diamond for $5,000, it's probably easier to ignore them than to tell them that's not going to workout.

Have you tried going to the Tiffany at the Short Hills Mall? They are usually pretty nice.
Was there someone specific at the Short Hills Mall you like dealing with? Maybe Tiffany prefers if you step in a store to get in contact with a SA, but it'd be great if I could get in touch with someone by email or phone first to see if they can find some rings that would be ideal for me.

I bet they haven't really upgraded their system much. It's very good to know what you saw looking over your SA's shoulder! If they don't have the full info on every ring I wonder how they get that information later to put on the certificate. Compared with online sites like Whiteflash, Tiffany is a worldwide company with stores and inventory everywhere so I can understand why it's hard to search through. I hope they can update that eventually.

I don't think the budget would be restraining him at all, since we didn't really give an original budget! I just gave a carat size which is safely on the small size (under .30), at least VS2 clarity and some other things. Mostly I was picky about cut. When I emailed I was returning the 1st ring I even said I could go up another .10ct to almost .40ct to try and sweeten the search for the new one! I kinda wish it was my original SA who did the return so I could have talked to him in person, but when I came into the store he was on his lunch break so another guy just did the return.

I haven’t bought in Short Hills in awhile but I also have had very good experiences with them. I also think the flagship store is a great option, my husband has bought from them several times and he has always been very happy with his service. Even with his smaller purchases they have been very great.

I’m surprised to hear about your bad experience. Even a small engagement ring sale at Tiffany is a decent sale, I would think. You’ve already given your SA enough time to try to keep your business....I’d move on. If you don’t have a specific store in mind, and it seems like you have several options in your area, maybe call stores you’re willing to travel to, and see what they have in stock? I’d imagine they’re more willing to pull stock from other stores after meeting in person. Good luck!

I guess that's true about shipping the rings. I imagine they have to insure it anytime they ship internally so it's not something done lightly. Ah well!

I did have an SA I specifically dealt with at the Short Hills Mall, but he has since left. I was so sad when I found out because he was really great to deal with, and we actually purchased my engagement ring and wedding bands from him. But the other SAs I have interacted with are also very nice. If I were you, I would first make an appointment to look at rings in the store and tell them what you are looking for. It shouldn't be too hard for them to transfer rings from another store if you need to look at more. They did that for us. It took about 3 days or so (can't remember exactly) for the ring to come in. Take your time and look at lots of rings. Try not to expect to figure it all out on one trip. Too much pressure and you want to make sure you find the right ring for you and have no doubts. In addition to all the stats on the cut, you want to make sure that it is pleasing to your eyes. Good luck with your search!
