I'm in the process of upgrading my engagement ring. My first ring have had for a few years, don't want to sound ungrateful but it has never been what I would consider a "sparkly" stone - the cut just isn't right, & the style doesn't really suit my finger. Although there are many jewelry shops in my area, I don't know of any specific good recommendations and have even heard rumours about the (questionable) quality of some stores - diamonds from India, injected with substances etc. So I went to Tiffany and the rings are gorgeous - although pricey - I feel at this stage, content with the stones/settings/manufacturing. Yes I realise that Tiffany is a (mass) brand name, which you pay more for, but I just want peace of mind that my ring is quality and will be gorgeous! Browsing the forum, another thread polled overwhelmingly that the preference is a non-branded bigger stone rather than a Tiffany ring. Any further advice or opinions on this? I would really appreciate, thanks!

My style of choice would be the Tiffany solitaire (or the Legacy!) :graucho:

Check out whiteflash or good old gold online. You can get the same (or better) quality stone and ring for a much better price.

However, if the brand name is something you really want, there's no replacement for Tiffany.

Numerous threads on this exact question!!!

End of the day....follow your heart. If you love Tiffany, GO FOR IT. They DO stand behind the name & you'll get quality w/o a doubt. I know there have been varying experiences, but don't let that hold you back if it's something you really want.

I chose to get my E-ring custom made, but at the same time, I have 2 bands from Tiffany I adore.

Totally agree, Good Old Gold is the bomb. You'll get more for your money.

I did NOT have a good Tiffany experience. And it's not worth the money for me to give them another go.

Thanks for the prompt replies everyone!

It's not that I'm really concerned about the actual name "Tiffany" - I just want to feel secure with the reputation of the store we purchase from and from what i saw today, I was impressed! There was no doubt the rings I looked at were amaaazing! I assume that there is no chance of "dodgy" diamonds with Tiffany. Don't want to let my DH down again....this is my last chance! LOL

Hmm. lots to think about!

Go with the brand name if that's what you want. i have many lovely Tiffany pieces that I adore - and they certainly take a lot of time and care selecting only close to perfect stones for their pieces.

HOWEVER - you can find the same quality stones elsewhere. Learn about certifications, GIA especially. The big difference is that you will need to do the leg work yourself.

Good luck and hope you love the new ering!

OT...I've been secretly wishing my DH surprises me with a new one soon!!!

well not going Tiffany will garner you much more options. Good Old Gold specializes in VERY well cut stones, and will allow your budget to go very much further.

If you like the diamond cut of the Legacy, and not all the foof around it, the Crisscut Cushion/Crisscut Asscher is almost identical.

^^ OT, but I love the word "foof"!

Also, while Tiffany diamonds are well vetted for sparkle and performance, you can find diamonds that may be a better cut elsewhere. (ducking and running)

Agreed. But I won't duck and run because it's true!

I love the word foof. lol

My fiance and I went the custom made route and I couldn't be happier! My engagement ring is a modified Tiffany Lucida three stone (it has the "lattice" on all three stones as opposed to just the center stone in the Tiffany ring) and while I loved the Tiffany Lucida, I would have had to compromise stone size for a brand name.

After doing a TON of research and working very hard with my jeweler in the diamond district in NYC, we found perfect stones (F color, VVS1 clarity) and it looks gorgeous! I know I would have had to pay A TON more for these stones had they come from Tiffany and honestly size DID matter to me hence why we went this route! I now have a little over 2 carats in my ering as opposed to the 1 carat total that I would have had from Tiffany.

I think it comes down to what is the most important to you, size or name? If you go the non-branded route, http://www.diamondsbylauren.com, is fabulous! I have a number of smaller pieces from them that I adore!

I have a Tiffany ring and I loved my experience there. The ring I got was about 40% more expensive than it would have been on Blue Nile (about 25% more when you factor in the discounts, I wrote about it here ) but it is worth it to me and I loved the classic Tiffany six prong setting, I didn't care for the "inspired" designs as much but many do and even prefer them.

It also depends on your husband/fiance and what he prefers and his time commitment- Tiffany is easy, you don't have to do that much research and you're pretty assured on quality.
