Hi,
My brother is planning to propose to his gf in the Spring time. He is looking to buy an e-ring from Tiffany and he has $30k to $35k budget. He is debating if he should get a G class diamond (~1.70ct) or H class diamond (~2 ct). He is leaning toward the 1.7 ct one but I told him to get a 2 ct if the price is not a big difference because he is not planning to upgrade the ring in the future... Please let me know your opinion. Thank you.:D

it depends... how color sensitive are you? I'm not that color sensitive so the G & H are close enough that it doesn't matter to me. Some people like "warmer" colored diamonds and there's an idea that they may throw more fire... as always, if you can see them in real life before purchase, that would help the most!

I think it depends on the cut. For instance, emerald cuts are pretty unforgiving so I would go for the stone that has the better color and clarity.

If I saw both stones in person and couldn't tell a difference, then I would totally go for the bigger stone. I wouldn't be telling people my "stats"... And really, I think it is impossible to buy a mediocre ring from Tiffany! All of their rings are beautiful.

I have an H colored 2 ct round solitaire from Tiffany and it is totally colorless to me. I could see a tint in I colored stones so I think H is my threshold. Not all of the stones at Tiffany are as well cut as they would like you to believe, so make sure your brother does his homework. This may be why I saw a tint in the I colored stone I saw, as I don't think I am too color sensitive.

A 2 ct RB H color may fall right out of your brother's budget when tax is included so he may want to try to find something a little under 2 cts to save a little money.

Good luck! :smile1:

Wow, thank you for all your ladies opinion. I will convenience my brother to buy a bigger size and a slightly lower color because the difference is not that much.

LabRatPhD,
I think my brother will go to New Hampshire to buy the ring because it's tax free over there.

i didn't know a 2 ct ring from tiffany only cost 30-35K?

i would go for the 2 ct ring as well, because those colors are so close to each other a person would probably not be able to tell the difference.

Carlinha,
My brother was planning to pay $30 - $35k for the ring, but he may increase the budget if he really decided to go for a 2ct.
