I just got my engagement ring re-set, and the new setting is just gorgeous! The center pear diamond is 1.26 carats, and it's surrounded by two rows of diamonds, totalling 1.13 carats. I know it's a little late to check, but the center diamond is held by only three prongs, and after reading many of your comments on previous threads, I was wondering if three prongs were enough.

I figured I would check with the experts. Thanks.

Is the tip protected by a prong that covers it completely (like on a princess cut stone)? If so, I'd think it's fine. I've seen lots of pear cuts set like that.

Congrats on your new setting! Please post pics if you can. :smile1:

^^That's good, as that will keep the tip from getting chipped. Be sure to let your jeweler check the prongs every so often though, just to be sure that they are holding your diamond securely. You can also do a quick check at home--give the stone a little nudge with your fingernail, and check to see that each prong is touching the stone. When the prong begins to lift away from the stone is when you should take it to your jeweler to have it repaired.

Purple Rose and Dutchess - thanks for your replies. I was frantically reading about prongs and settings, and I got a little nervous. When I went out looking for a new setting, I assumed I would have to get one custom made, but then I found one that was just gorgeous. My diamond fit perfectly, so I purchased it a bit impulsively and then had questions later.

I feel much better now!
