ThredUp has always been an enigma to me. Years ago it was like an online Plato's Closet featuring predominantly secondhand fast fashion and very dated Coach and Calvin Klein styles with few exceptions.

Yet, their recent 45% Labor Day sale really surprised me! Especially their Premium and Designer Brands sections and Bundle Shipping, when you pay for an order but keep it open just in case you have more purchases to add later.

I'd love to hear about people's recent experiences with ThredUp—good or not so good—and any cool finds you've found along the way!

Below are a few of my recent buys I'm still waiting on to be delivered.

MISA Los Angeles sleeveless ruffle top, ThredUp Price USD 19.50 (Reg Retail USD 260):

BA&SH wool cardigan with balloon sleeves, ThredUp Price USD 44.55 (Reg Retail USD 295)

I know somebody who does a lot of shopping on ThredUp. It's a great way to recycle clothes and avoid buying new. She buys both work outfits (business casual blouses, skirts) and weekend/fun outfits, as well as shoes. She's had particularly good luck with designer jeans. I think it helps that she can predict her size accurately and she knows which brands fit her well.

I have consigned to ThredUp but it's been a while. They made it very easy with the prepaid mailing at one point. Hmm...good idea for a thread. I'm going to have another look today and see!

That's great to hear! I've gotten a few LOFT dresses for the office before too in some vibrant colors, including some NWT items. I think ThredUp supplements stock they buy en bulk at a discount from certain retailers similar to The Real Real, TJ Maxx and others.

I've never consigned with them though. How did you feel about the turnaround time between consigning and payout? I just consigned for the first time with The Real Real and they've taken almost 2 months to list my items.

It's been years since I consigned with ThredUp, and I would do it again if I got organized about it. At the time, my approach was to view the extra closet space as the main reason for consigning. They really didn't offer much for the clothing, nor did I send them anything particularly fancy, but a variety of workwear, casual clothing, kids' clothing, and accessories like scarves and handbags (Coach or little department store clutches I didn't see myself reusing).

I think the turnaround time was fine, but again, I wasn't waiting for any large payouts so it was OK either way. I've never consigned with TRR but I would check out the threads about it if you haven't already.

Good luck with the process if you do go with ThredUp!

I sent them 2 boxes full of designer jeans in June, because I no longer wear jeans. The boxes still haven't been processed (though they did send me an email recently saying they were still in the lineup to be processed). I just wanted to try it out with items that I would have donated otherwise. It was a few thousand dollars worth of jeans, but I would never wear them, so nothing to lose. I think their backlog is long through.

^^ this has been my experience, too. ThredUp takes forever to process consignments. But it IS a decent option if you are not in a hurry for funds and are OK getting very little. THe other factor that is a bit frustrating is that they ask you to send in seasonally appropriate items but then by the time they process them, the season may have passed so they wind up donating more of the items than otherwise. I'm honestly not sure I will use them again, because even though it's nice getting at least a little $ for things, I think it might be a better deal to donate and claim the donation on my taxes.

@nicole0612 I'm so sorry to hear that. What a slow an inconvenient experience, especially with pricey clothing. That's essentially my current experience with TRR. I intended to donate the two handbags I consigned so no harm, no foul. I guess the long turnaround times is common across online consignment platforms.

@lurketylurk Completely agree. These online consignment platforms are definitely not places that pay anywhere close to 50-75% of retail. I'm not sure if I'd consign with any online platform in the future because donation is so much easier.

Thank you, I really don't mind. I figured it was worth it just to try out something different.

Update: ThredUpUp delivered.

Overall Rating: 4/5

They sent the wrong skirt, or the pictures were so photoshopped that the colors were different. The skirt is mostly yellow when it was pink in the original photo. They told me to keep the skirt and they'd credit me 50% of the price bc I would only get $2 more if I returned it due to their $3.99 restocking fee. I took the credit. lol

Still waiting on the MISA ruffle top to arrive.

The Bernardo shoes were practically new!

The wool BA&HS sweater and LOFT dress were basically new too.

Those seem like good finds! Nice that the condition of the items exceeded expectations. Not so nice about the color difference but FWIW I think the pale yellow and blue go well together.

@GoStanford It definitely is a lovely skirt! But this much sunny yellow seems to make my Hispanic tan skin tone look off (sallow?) for some reason. Colors like gold or mustard feel more complimentary. I've decided I'll donate the skirt since it's NWT and let someone else enioy it.

That's good of you to donate it. I know what you mean; with my skin tone I also prefer gold/mustard - those are great colors. I'm not a pastel yellow person at least not in large amounts.

I'm glad you revived the ThredUp conversation as I think there are some good findings on there. I'm impressed about the shoes! I haven't been brave enough to commit to shoes online unless they are easy to return.
