I just got the vintage herbag from Japan this evening and when I opened the package, a strange smell ran straight through me. Huh… and I just put the canvas part in the washing machine with hand wash mode and it survived but still some smell there. My point is, Hermes’ quality doesn’t disappoint me. 😅

This is going to sound odd, but: have you tried washing the bag in the dishwasher? I’m for real here. I had a leather-handle designer fabric bag with a very strong cat smell (my cat, my bad!). I tried everything I knew to get that smell out, but the smell was still present. My last resort: the dishwasher. I put the bag into an empty dishwasher (do NOT do this with a load of dishes in the washer! Empty DW only!) with detergent and ran it through a short cycle. When I pulled it out later, it was very wet, but it smelled of —- nothing!
The smell was washed out at the atomic level and I smelled nothing but wet canvas and fresh clean dishwasher. Then I let it air-dry, realized I’d have to iron it, forced myself to actually iron it (I. Hate. IRONING.), and it looked and smelled great. The End. 🤗
