Thanks
@papertiger for opening a thread for this new bag and thanks for sharing
@mgrnt! It looks beautiful and fits your outfit so well! I've been eyeing this one, but from what I've read about Original GG Canvas, I'm afraid it won't be super carefree. How's it so far in your experience?
Thank you so much!
I've only used it a for a couple of days so far (Saturday and Sunday of last weekend) while running errands, going out to lunch etc. I gave it a once-over just now to see if there was any wear or potential for future issues. Luckily there's nothing to report!
I know that the original canvas has had it's problems over the years, but here are my thoughts on how the design of this particular bag might reduce some of the wear and tear people have experienced on other bags:
1. The structure - a lot of the original canvas bags that I've seen with damage were slouchier or just generally less structured styles. Things like pleats, folds, exposed seams, etc. seem to invite more wear and tear. The Luce bag is pretty structured, which eliminates the movement/friction/rubbing that could cause the canvas to get damaged.
2. The lining - the lining of the bag and the flap is a stiffer leather, which of course supports the shape and structure, and helps to prevent creasing on certain parts of the bag. When I open and close the flap, the canvas on the outside doesn't bubble or crease at all. It stays completely flat, so it's attached very well to the backing/lining.
3. The leather trim - the bottom, corners, and all other edges of the bag are covered in that same structured leather, which will hopefully stop any of those areas from wearing thin like it could on a bag that doesn't have protection in those spots.
Of course, that doesn't mean that some random point of failure might not expose itself over time, or that it won't have some wear eventually, but all of the things I mentioned make me feel like it will withstand more than the original canvas bags of the past. I do think putting some kind of protectant on the canvas would be a good idea, but I'm still looking into what the best option for that would be.
Having said all that, I could be completely full of it and destined to be disappointed, but as of right now, I haven't had any problems!
