I can't tell if it is gray or a lighter taupe/brownish color...

It's really all of the above depending on the light. I've seen it in different stores and sometimes it looks more gray and other more taupe. It also has darker speckles so it's not a flat color. Also, the pilot bags in earth are slightly different from the current production bags - the pilot ones looked more like natural stone to me - so if you see one make sure you know which version it is!
