Just wondering, if you ordered by phone from the sale, where you charged tax--and if not, which stores exactly? I know some people weren't, even though they were in states that carry Chanel. Thanks.

To my understanding, if there's a Chanel boutique/counter/store in the state in which you reside, you will be charged local sales tax on your purchases from whatever store you buy from. But if you live in a state where there is no Chanel boutique/store/counter, and you place an order by phone, they will not charge you sales tax. You just have to have it shipped to you at your home address. If your friend didn't pay tax on their Chanel purchase, it's possible that they were buying the bag in a city that doesn't charge any sales tax. Find out where that is-- I'm going! Heheh! I don't think the individual stores can decide whether to charge sales tax. I am fairly certain it all has to do with the location of the buyer.

Hope that helps!

That's exactly right. Basically, if the store you order from has no physical presence in the destination state (the state where you live), then the store will not charge tax. The only way your friend didn't get charged tax is if she had the store send it to her at home and there is no tax in her home state.

I am not sure how it works, but I live in Chicago and there is no Chanel in the Saks here. I ordered a bag from FL and from AZ and no sales tax was charged. I also recently ordered something from Burberry in Las vegas, had it shipped to chicago and no sales tax was added. I cannot imagine IL being generous and not having tax. Something else is going on.....

I just found this on the Saks site.....

Sales tax will be charged for purchases shipped to the following states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Illinois is on there, so I don't know what the deal is with tax!!

^^ but you just stated that your saks DOSENT carry chanel...thus you were NOT charged for sales tax because there is no chanel presence in your area. get it?

its cut and dry lol

if you have chanel presence in YOUR state (ie. billing address) then you will be charged local sales tax, if you DONT have a chanel presence in your state then you will NOT be charged sales tax.

I get that.....Saks doesn't charge you because they don't carry Chanel in their Chicago stores...that doesn't explain what happened with the no tax at the Burberry store, since we have many in Chicago.

pgurl: What do you mean by presence? I am assuming you mean presence of Chanel in the Saks store, right?

Three times I have ordered Chloe bags from Saks stores via charge send - from NYC, Dallas and Chicago. I live in MA; there is a Saks in Boston. None of the these store charged me tax on my purchases. Yet when I ordered a Kooba bag from the Ft. Lauderdale store, I was charged tax. There is definitely something in their system that overrides tax and it seems to vary from store to store.
