Tattoed Stars Make Their Mark

  1. Tattoed Stars Make Their Mark

Tattoo parlors seem to be the new hotspots for todays' ink-loving celebrities.

Angelina Jolie's affinity for tattoos is just one of her many attention-grabbing characteristics. Among her many tattoos, past and present, are those representing former husbands Johnny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton. The latitude and longitude of each of her four children's birthplace locations were added, in part to cover up Thornton's name, after their divorce. She also sports a Sanskrit prayer for son Maddox on her left shoulder.

Here, Jolie smiles while getting a tattoo of a tiger engraved on her back by Thai tattoo master Sompong Kanphai in Bangkok, July 2004. It was the second time that Jolie flew to Bangkok to get a tattoo.

British soccer star David Beckham hasn't been afraid to show off his ink -- he often rips off his shirt at games -- or talk about it. In his autobiography, "David Beckham: My Side," Beckham says his tattoos represent all the people in his life, including the names of his three boys on his back (overlooked by a guardian angel) and a Knight Templar on his right arm that represents the English national team.

A similar shoulder tattoo is just one of the reasons that "Transformers" hottie Megan Fox is being compared to Angelina Jolie. In a similar vertical fashion, Fox's main ink refers to a quote from Shakespeare's "King Lear": "We'll live, and pray, and sing, and tell old tales, and laugh at gilded butterflies." Additionally, the breakout actress has a star and crescent moon above her inner ankle and an image of Marilyn Monroe on her right forearm.

Every pirate should be expected to have a little, or a lot, of body decoration. Among the tats "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Johnny Depp has is one that reads "Winona Forever." The Hollywood bad boy was once in a relationship with Winona Ryder, his "Edward Scissorhands" co-star. It now reads "Wino Forever." A tattoo on his right forearm is often mistaken for representing "Pirates" character Capt. Jack Sparrow, but the sparrow actually refers to his son, Jack, whose name appears below the image.

Music heartthrob Justin Timberlake has undergone quite a transformation since his early days on "The Mickey Mouse Club" with his curly hair. Timberlake has a guardian angel on his back, a tribal band around his ankle, a Chinese symbol for music and his initials on his ankle. However, his most prominent tattoo is a cross on his left shoulder, which the pop star got while he was touring with 'NSync in 2001.

  2. Among the nine tattoos new mom Nicole Richie has is a tattoo of ballet slippers representing her father, Lionel Richie , who wrote "Ballerina Girl" for "The Simple Life" star. The young socialite also has a pair of wings on her back, which she hasn't been afraid to show off during her multiple red-carpet appearances.

Musician Joel Madden, Richie's boyfriend and the father of her newborn daughter, Harlow Winter Kate, also has his fair share of tattoos. However, his right arm can't quite compete with the arm of Benji Madden, his twin brother and Good Charlotte band-mate.

Rap star Eminem's tattoos also reference people in his life. Among the most prominent is a portrait of his daughter, Halie Jade. He had her name tattooed on his lower right arm when she was born Christmas 1995, but later dedicated his upper right arm to his daughter, complete with a bed of roses and the words "Bonnie & Clyde," a reference to a song he dedicated to her.

Troubled singer Amy Winehouse has a tattoo-laden body, including a horseshoe, feather, bird, lightning bolt and a winged angel. Winehouse also has a few topless pin-ups, which reflect the singer's own nostalgia for earlier decades. Her '60s beehive has now become iconic.

Rapper Eve sure knows how to break out her claws. However, for her foray into acting as a fashion designer on the UPN sitcom "Eve," the tattooed artist applied makeup to cover her trademark cat paws.

  3. Another Brit famous for his tattoos is Robbie Williams. His left arm shows a partial-sleeve-style tattoo inspired by a Maori tribal design . On his right lower rarm he has what he calls the Christian, an image of Jesus Christ on the cross complete with the Virgin Mary and angels. Highlights of the pop star's many other tattoos include the Eye of Horus on the back of his neck, a pair of swallows on his stomach, a lion on his bicep and the musical notes to the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" on his lower back.

Rapper 50 Cent sports his tattoos alongside other permanent scars: nine gunshot wounds. For his 2005 movie and corresponding soundtrack, "Get Rich, or Die Tryin'," 50 Cent flaunted his back art, including the huge words South Side and the number 50.

Rihanna is the latest star to make headlines after heading to the tattoo parlor. The Barbadian singer has already shown her love for body art with four tattoos: a Pisces sign behind her right ear, a star in her left ear, a music note on her ankle and a Sanskrit prayer down her hip. At left, Rihanna headed into Body Electric in Hollywood, Calif., to get some more ink in January.

Actress Drew Barrymore has been inked with a milieu of tattoos since her days as a Hollywood wild child. At least a few of Barrymore's tattoos have been spotted on the red carpet: a cross with a vine wrapped around it on her right ankle, three cherubs on a cross with her mom's name, Jade, on her lower back and a moon on her right big toe. Meanwhile, a splash session in Hawaii, left, while on vacation with Cameron Diaz revealed two others: a butterfly below her navel and a floral design on her hip. However, these have been on display since Barrymore posed for Playboy in 1995.

  7. cool! i love tats :p
  8. I like that they're becoming mainstream. I don't have any myself, but I love that others have the dedication to display their loves or convictions permanently.
  9. I found Vanishing Tattoo when I was considering whether or not to get my first one. I saw all the pictures of the stars' tattoos, but the ones that convinced me I wanted one was Sarah Michelle Gellar's and Britney Spears's.

I remember thinking they were so delicate and if they had tattoos, I could have one, too.
  10. cool thread, I love tattoos.
  11. I love tattoos on men, major turn on.
  12. Agreed.

I like David Beckham's and Anthony Kiedis' tats. I'm not the biggest fan of color unless it is really something striking and out of the norm.

I like text as well. I'm trying to decide the details of my first and I know it will be text.
  13. Cool! I loveee tatz
