Well first off, if you're in the left lane, even if going the speed limit, you're supposed to yield to faster traffic. Most states have signs that read "slower traffic keep right". I tend to drive in the left lane and occasionally I do tailgate if the car won't change lanes. Again, they're supposed to yield to me. Now, if it's a single lane and I know there's no way for the person to pull over, I don't tailgate. What's the point?

But...all you guys who brake check...reminds me of a story from a couple of years ago. I was headed to work on the interstate. My exit was coming up and I was only going about 80 (10 over the limit), so I take it out of gear, start to coast and get in the right lane. There was a guy in an Integra, going below the limit, that I crept up on, and since I was out of gear and slowing, I figure I'd only be on his ass for about 5 seconds. Evidently that was 2 seconds too long for him, so he slammed on his brakes, but by that time, I had slowed enough to where it didn't make a difference and I gently pressed my brakes to slow a bit more. No biggie...except I them see him flipping me off and shaking his fist, etc etc. So we're at the light and he's talking $hit to me. I just say a few things back, but he keep on. So finally, I tell him to STFU or do something. He gets out. I get out. I notice he has a blackjack (it's a stiff leather "rod" with a lead ball on the end). So, he comes at me, I dodge his swing and maneuver him into a headlock and start punching him in the face. He starts to swing up with the blackjack so he can hit my head. He got me a couple of times so I switched him around so that he was bent over...still in a head lock. Punched him a few times in the stomach, then kneed him in the head and asked "do you want some more?" He and his bloody nose got in his car and drove off. So, I straighted my shirt, put my shades on, and drove to work. So again...be careful who you mess with. He tried to be a bad ass by getting out and confronting me, yet he ended up with a torn shirt, broken glasses and a busted nose. Obviously, I'd never do that to a woman, but you never know who might.

and for this reason, i carry a loaded gun on me. (jk people! dont get offended!)

I hate tailgaters. It even pi$$es me off when I see it happening to someone else.

^ Me too!

I do most of my driving on back (country type) roads. I'm very familiar with these roads and with my car, so I know how fast I can safely go given the conditions... The other day I was on a really hilly, winding road in FREEZING RAIN and I was doing the speed limit, maybe a little above. My car has AWD, but I just didn't feel like it was safe to go faster. Some jackass came flying up behind me in an suv, tailgating me, talking on their phone, swerving all over the place and I had nowhere to pull over. I was so pissed. I don't care how much of a rush you're in, it doesn't give you the right to risk someone else's life!!!!! :nogood:

daaaaaaaaaamn, charles! that's crazy. the poor guy! hahaha.

seriously though, i slow down when there's a tailgater, even if i'm in the left lane. cuz, guess what, i'm usually going 10-20 mph faster than the speed limit ANYWAY, and if they're tailgating me they're really asking to get a ticket. i understand the "yield to faster traffic" clause and all, but that's assuming you're going really slow/just at speed limit.

road rage sucks.

Most of you guys are NUTS!! Do you REALLY want to risk someone slamming into your car?? Sure, the A-hole behind you has to pay for the damage to your car, but no amount of money is going to recoup what a rear-end collision will do to your body. A lot of you that have replied to this thread are young, but when you get older, your health is far more important that "proving a point".

You guys that are flipping off people really need to grow up! Sorry, but that's how I feel about it. What's the point of that? Whose immaturity is being shown by doing that? Why on EARTH would anyone risk their personal safety by flipping off someone that already has CLEARLY demonstrated that they have issues or they wouldn't be sitting on your ass anyway. No one knows what's under the seat of someone that puts public safety at risk by scraping the bumper of the car in front of them.

Slowing down to 2MPH? Again, inappropriate and ridiculously dangerous along with you guys that gleefully think confrontation is the way to go.

Driving is serious business. Get serious! If you've got a tailgater, maintain your speed and let them go around you. If they are clearly into road rage, then by God, pull the hell over and get out of their way, try to get their license plate number and call 911. Who wants to DIE to make a point about traffic laws??

And those of you who do tailgate: SHAME ON YOU!!

Rant over.....

I agree 100%.

I value the lives of my family and other families on the road too much to act like an idiot (and break the law) by slamming on brakes unnecessarily or slowing down to a crawl. I think the last time I flipped someone off I was 11.

To the poster who said she didn't care about her car getting hit. WOW. Have you ever been in a car accident before? Even seemingly minor ones can be life-changing.

compliment, sacrasm? a bit of both?? haha. maybe i just dont get it bc im sooo tired from studying for finals i only got 40 mins of "sleep" hahaha sorry!
That was absolutely a compliment! Seriously! Not one shred of sarcasm intended.

A big  again to your mother for being a smart driver!! We need more of her on the highways these days.

ITA 1000000000%!!! There's enough stress in every day life sometimes, without adding road rage over a taigater. If someone is being a pain-in-the-you-know-what and tailgating obnoxiously, what's the harm in moving/pulling over and letting them pass?? :shrugs: Who freakin' cares who gets there first anyway?

Playing games with brakes, flipping people off...oy. Two wrongs don't make a right.

If someone wants to drive like an idiot, potentially endangering his/her life and the lives of others, I certainly don't want that person anywhere around me on the road.

I hate tailgaters...I'm so scared to get my permit in a few months because I might get tailed. My mom just ignores them or if it's a big truck tailing her, she'll pull over. My friend's parents drive me home sometimes and they tail people...it's sooo scary!

aww thankies!! i love my mama! shes really the flipping greatest. better than any purse, shoe, diamond... ok ok u get the picture. aahahhaaa. I LOVE THAT WOMAN!! :yahoo::yahoo:

You never know who is in a car that is behind you. Screwing with that "unknown" is never worth it IMO. Let them pass. Losing your life to someone who may have a gun, and who is having a bad day, is not worth it.

Just recently, this person found this out the hard way:

Ore. firefighter, brother-in-law shot after confronting tailgater
12/11/2007, 8:53 p.m. PST
The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A firefighter and his brother-in-law were shot after they confronted a driver tailgating them down a treacherous stretch of U.S. 26 from Mount Hood, police said.

Joshua Gehrke, 32, a Clackamas County firefighter and paramedic, was listed in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the gut Tuesday night at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland

His brother-in-law, Joseph Langley, 33, was shot in the arm and released from OHSU.

The shooting occurred about 10 p.m. Monday while Gehrke, Langley, Gehrke's 9-year-old son and another 9-year-old boy were returning from a snowboarding trip on Mount Hood.

Langley, the driver, told the Oregon State Police that he eventually stopped their van on the shoulder of U.S. 26 and the car that had been tailgating them pulled behind.

Gehrke and Langley told troopers they got out of the van, walked toward the car and had a verbal exchange with the driver. A man described as in his 30s and wearing a baseball cap fired at least two rounds at Gehrke and Langley.

The men said they ran back to the van and briefly drove west before pulling over, about a quarter of a mile from the Hoodland Fire District No. 74 station.

Fire Capt. Linn Norgard was heading out of the fire station parking lot to head home when he heard the dispatch call over the radio: "A shooting, two men injured, possible road rage, on U.S. 26 near East Lolo Pass Road."

He said word spread quickly among law enforcement and firefighters that one of their own had been wounded.

"It adds a little bit of concern," Norgard said Tuesday. "It's a brotherhood."

I couldn't agree more with you Roo. Why mess with some crazed loonie. I have no problem getting out of their way. The sooner they pass me, the less bs I have to deal with. You never know now days.
