Hi all! I'm hoping to gain some new updated information about tadelakt. I noticed in the "What leather would you not buy for a birkin" thread that may of you are against it. Why? Can you share experiences and pictures of wear if possible? Does it scratch easily? How about the rain issue? corner wear, etc.............

The old tadelakt threads on the board are helpful but there haven't been any updates by those who own tadelakt bags and have been using them for a while. I have seen the swatch and felt the leather but I really need to know how it wears.

The reason for my inquiry is that there is a bag in fauve tadelakt that I am considering for the fall. (a 35 kelly) I would like this bag to be in heavy rotation but now I'm worried that I'll be a slave to it's delicacy. I own bags in box and swift so any comparisons to how those leathers are "in action" would be helpful.

Please help!!! :help:

Thanks!

first of all very few birkins are made in tadelakt. like box its hard to find clean enough large pieces. i think every leather or skin has legitimate issues. i like tadelakt and feel its more hardy than swift.

I have a small bag in takdelakt which I use occasionally, mine is still in excellent condition. I've seen a woman with her 35 tadelakt kelly and it also looked good. I guess if you store it properly after each use, it should be fine.

I prefer the patina of Box. Tadelakt just looks beat up to me after a while.

Bingo! I'm thinking this is a bag I'll have to baby, so the skin stays new looking. I also love a good patina...especially on a color like fauve.

I am relieved to hear your positive comments, hermesaholic and bluewin. Bluewin is your bag a lighter color? What type of bag is yours, hermesaholic? Does it have handles?

Thank you so much everyone for the info so far.

I agree with castorny. Tadelakt has a sort of dry hand sometimes, and lacks the depth (and proven longevity) of box; I don't see any advantage to it over box.

The lady who has the 35 kelly and mine are both in violet.
I will take a picture of my kp later
Mine is about little less than 2 years old.

My Tadelakt Bolide is a year old. Granted, I do not wear it every day, but when I do, I cannot get over the beauty of the leather. The bag is bi-color. The main color is parchemin and there is a lot a depth to the color and it is somehow mesmerizing. There is some veining in the skin, which is what makes it so interesting. There is no real wear on it. I won't wear it in the rain, because I have a LV Azur rainy day bag. I like the leather because it seems a bit plumper than my box bags. I have, also, a Tadelakt Constance in potiron. I don't wear it a lot, because I consider it more of a dressy bag, but it is also a plump sort of feel to it. I cannot explain what I mean by it's plumpness, but it almost feels like there must be more layers of leather? Or the leather itself is thicker than box. I was told by the leather specialist at the boutique that Tadelakt is a combination of swift and box.
I don't think it should have a bad reputation anymore than leathers have.

That kelly 40 looks slouchy, it looks more like a casual kind of bag in bigger size, almost like Kelly relax in sikkim leather.

I guess it depends on size of bag and how the bag is treated.
Mine is a smaller bag and it doesn't look like that. I love how color shows on tadelakt
I took mine out when it was drizzling and had no problems.
No corner wear so far and I don't think it scratches that easily.

I don't actually know it can be so slouch! As mine is 28Kelly, I always thought it is quite structural! About about scratches, I do think it can be as scratchy as boxcalf! But this leather take colour so beautifully, can't resist it!!

Bababebi, thank you so much!!! Incredibly helpful, thank you, thank you!!! That bag looks pretty well loved and doesn't look that bad to me. I like a little worn in feeling to my bags.

Bluewin and Forever132, I find it interesting that your smaller bags are more structured in feeling.

I guess I can expect a 35 kelly to be somewhere in the middle:smile:

I am just a little nerve wracked over this purchase because It'd probably going to be my last bag (sure,..... no really!).........

Glad to see you've piped in Baltobag lady, I love your bolide.

My favorite bag! beautiful!

My tadelakt kelly is lovely but it does scratch rather easily and I have sustained a fingernail scratch which I have not quite gotten over (and hence not quite used it as much as I should for fear of inflicting more damage).

My tadelakt constance also gives me grief wrt scratches, esp when it is so easy to catch it when I try to open it.

They are both beautiful bags in lovely colours but perhaps, to delicate for my lifestyle. Hence I think I will pass on others in the same leather in future, although that said, my swifts scratch jst as easily! The only scratch proof one I've had thus far is my epsom but it looks rather synthetic and hence am not really a massive fan.

It's complex isnt it!? Think I love my tadelakt after all.

In short, I would recommend it for an 'occasional use bag' and be ready for scratches.
