So I've been watch shopping with my DH, and I'm thinking of buying him one for his first Father's Day.

First, I picked the Cartier Roadster (ss w/white face & black rubber strap), which he loved when he tried it on at Cartier. But he also loves the Cartier Pasha (ss w/black face & rubber strap) and Baume & Mercier Capeland LE. When I asked him which one really stood out- he said that he loved all three of them, but none of them stood out as a "had to have".

(I know most TPFers are familiar with the Roadster & Pasha, so here's a pic of the Capeland)

It would be a watch that he'd wear for evening/weekend outfits (i.e. R&R jeans, polo, & BV sneakers). Any suggestions?

Thanks! :smile1:

I like the looks of the Baume & Mercier Capeland, but it seems a little expensive for a modified Valjoux 7753 movement. You may want to look at Longines if you want to spend less, or JLC if you want to stay in the same price range.
I just remember seeing the retail on the B&M around 7k, but I am not sure how much you are being quoted.

Mr. Ho: Thanks! I thought the B&M Capeland was a bit pricy too @ $7K, especially for- according to the SA- an IWC movement. He really wanted to sell us this watch, as he had "just come back from a B&M training". But my impression was that he was only marginally familiar with the brand.

My favorites are between the Cartier Roadster (SS w/rubber strap @ $4,200)

and Cartier Pasha Seatimer (SS w/SS & rubber strap @ $6,750)

I can't decide between the two...
And I don't know if there are other brands/styles that I haven't seen that others would recommend...

(btw, we're not looking at gold watches, b/c it's not his style. And his wedding band is black & grey tungsten. hth.)

What a thoughtful gift for Father's day!

I know that Father's day is this weekend, but at that level of investment, I think you should take him out shopping again and wait until he really falls in love with something.

In the 7K range of sport watches you should look at JLC Master Compressor, Rolex 14060 Submariner or Panerai 299; there are a lot of choices out there in higher end brands than B&M.

In the 4K range you could look at the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra, Tudor Hydronaut II, JS Watch Co. SIF; again lots of choices.

For even less you could look at Longines HydorConquest.

B&M is owned by the Richemont Group, which IWC and JLC are part of. It probably does use a similarly modified ETA movement as some IWC's. IWC I think has only two in-house movements, neither of which are used by B&M. JLC uses only in-house movements. The Panerai 299 i think uses the same ETA movement as the B&M.

There is nothing wrong with ETA movements, they are very reliable and easily fixed, but the price of the watch should reflect the movement.

Exact same thoughts.
