I was recently accepted to medical school and my mum is insisting on buying me a watch to commemorate this "occasion." I've told her that I appreciate the offer, but I really feel like my acceptance letter (I plan on framing it :shame: - I'm such a nerd) is enough. Nevertheless, she is being very persistent.

The ones she's brought up are the Omega Speedmaster (she knows I'll love the history behind it) or the Chanel J12. I'm not a fan of the men's or women's Speedmaster Reduced, but the "regular" size is a bit big for my wrist, I think. On the other hand, we (both my mum and I) wonder if the J12 is classic enough to wear "forever".

Opinions? Suggestions for others in a similar price range (max. ~ $6500)?

Gongrats on your acceptance offer!! If you want a classic watch to last forever, J12 might not be an ideal choice. There are a lot of classics out there that can last a lifetime! Some to note around your budget are Jaeger Le-Coultre Reversos and Rolexes.

Congrats on your acceptance! Unfortunately I do not think J12 will be a forever classic. I'd say Rolex is the way to go. I think there have been new styles that recently came out. So you might be able to get a deal on an older style. Are you looking for a ladies size or a mid-size?

I'm in the process of buying a men's rolex oyster perpetual date Stainless Steel white face. The size of those is 34mm. There are other Rolexes that are 36mm--the datejust and the day date. There's a Rolex yachtmaster that's 35. And there are some Omegas in that size range as well (and a little less pricey).

I'm buying a pre-owned rolex--since this is for a special occasion that might not be appropriate, but on the rolexforums.com site there are lots of crazy watch nuts with all kinds of info of all things rolex (there are also small omega and Tag etc. . .sections, but mostly it's a Rolex orgy over there). There are also forum members/sellers with excellent references if for you're considering used.

Congratulations on your acceptance into Med school! Quite an accomplishment. (You'll probably want a watch with a date (for dating orders, right?) and an easy to read second hand (pulses right?) Maybe even glow-in the dark markers (for all those middle of the night calls when you're fumbling around in the dark wondering what ungodly time it is--ha!!)

ccharms - Congratulations on your acceptance offer. It is a very meaningful occassion and I think you should celebrate it with a piece which you can remember forever and that would be the Rolex. My DH would say the Omega.

Anyway, if you are not a fan of men's size watches, then Rolex 31mm would be a better bet. The rest are either 34mm, 36mm and bigger.

Thanks for the info!

I never thought of these things!
