Hi ladies!

I need some styling help.

I bought this black skater skirt from Nordstrom, and I'm planning to wear it with tall suede black boots.

I want to wear a sweater on top for a cozy look.

I originally thought this could work - http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=29126265&parentid=W_APP_SWEATERS
but it just looks all wrong.

What do the experts think?
Should skater skirts only be worn with fitted tops? I've seen people pull off the sweater look but can't figure it out.

It's hard without seeing a pic of you in the outfit that doesn't work, but from looking at the pics, I think the short flared skirt needs a more fitted top. It's also possible the sweater is making it look 'too heavy'. If you want a sweater top, maybe it needs to be shorter, otherwise the skirt may not be falling as it should. What happens if you belt the sweater etc? Do you have a lighter weight sweater?

I find with skater skirts you have to show almost the entire skirt otherwise u might appear big or shapeless. So a top you can put inside the skirt, or a shorter sweater or eventually a longer knit but as cardigan so still fitted shirt underneath.

I agree.
If you cover a portion of the skirt, you lose the movement and risk looking rectangular.
