I'm the lucky recipient of a hand-made wooden storage shelf that would be perfect for my bags, but I'm worried about paint/color transfer (it's painted black.) Does anyone know if I added a clear or lacquer coat if that would protect the bags and/or dust bags? No paint comes off rubbing my hands or other objects along the shelves, but I don't want to risk my purses! I'm either paranoid or smart to be concerned, but not sure which one.

I'll probably add the extra layer regardless, but if anyone has any prior experience in this area, I'd love to hear it! I tried google, but my search terms are not coming up with relevant results.

It depends how fresh the paint is as sometimes it takes a while for the paint not to have items susceptible to sticking to it. On an item I had freshly painted I used a nice cloth on it to put my handbag on for a while to ensure it would be safe from the paint. Now I can just put items directly on the surface.

My purses are all in dust bags on the top shelf of my closet which is painted. I haven't had any issue but in the past I have seen issues with putting things on painted surfaces in humid weather or on uncured paint. I wouldn't worry to much, if you don't feel any tackyness. Personally if I were to put an extra top coat on the shelves I wouldn't use high gloss paint just as an extra precaution.
Share pics! I always love seeing how everyone stores their bags.

I did some additional googling and found that as long as the paint is fully dry (not tacky/sticky at all) then I should be fine, which you pretty much confirmed for me. So, I'm hoping to finish this project tomorrow if I can figure out where to put it. Will definitely post pics once done. Thank you both!

I had a bookshelf that was painted black and even years later my book ends, when I moved them, would bring paint (not wet) up off the surface after they'd been sitting for long time. It might have to do with the weight of them, or the material, or humidity like someone posted above, but personally I would not put the purses directly on the painted wood just to be safe. I'd lay down a cloth or something, or the dustbags would serve as an adequate separation between the purse and the wood.

I have my purses on a painted wood shelf. I just bought some plexi from Lowes and put it down. The store cut all the pieces to fit for me. No problems since. :)

Don't trust anything touching your purses... if you have them in dustbags then only do so if you consider the dustbags a sacrificial item.
I had a suede purse leaning against a painted wooden chest (sealed years ago with Mod Podge) and to my horror when I rotated that bag out, there were big chunks of paint stuck to my bag! The Mod Podge/paint had transferred to the suede somehow and completely ripped off of the chest. I had to cut the suede off of the bag to get rid of the paint.

When I was a kid I made a door stop with mod podge. A cute kitty shaped thing covered in fun fabric. I loved it and was so proud of my work, then summer hit and without air conditioning the humidity reactivated the mod podge and kitty became one with the carpet and part of my door. I can't remember how we got it off the carpet but it was a disaster (I can't imagine that carpet being one of my bags instead, definitely crying would be involved).
I've always used varathane satin finish to finish wood projects and have never had an issue. Even my coffee table has held up well considering my toddler likes to spill her water on it constantly.
