How are you all doing in this economy with your jewelry?

Do you live where its safe to wear large carat size diamond jewelry, or do you find yourself toning things down?

I'm finding that I think more about where I wear certain jewelry in this economy. I'll wear it to places that I know are reasonably safe, but if I'm going to the center of the city, I'll leave the engagement ring at home and wear only my plain wedding band.

Am I alone in this? Or do others here have a "stealth mode" in this era of "recession"?

I wear my jewelry at all times, diamond studs, diamond necklace and a diamond ring, it is quite large, I just turn it around or pull my sleeve over it in the bus or in some streets, but otherwise I have not changed my habits

We don't have street crime over here, I live in the center of the city and I ride the metro and tram all the time. Never even felt someone staring, even less felt threatened. I wear my jewelry as I always did.

I wouldn't do the same in other cities outside my country though.

Only problem here is the burglaries during August, Christmas and Easter when ppl are away for holidays, but we have everything insured.

I toned my jewelry down. Not so much for safety, but for other reasons. One, my husband and I have been hit by the economy to some degree, and I felt my bigger jewelry was no longer a representation of where we were. Weird, I know, but I was kind of like the opposite of wanting to upgrade a diamond when a couple is more financially able. The second reason is that these are REALLY hard times for people. Everyday is a struggle for so many people. People fight to save their homes and struggle to feed their families. I don't feel like wearing something worth so much money, especially when it's not representative of where we are financially, out in public because it feels too "in your face" or irresponsible or something. I've never had the right words to explain it. I don't think other people should feel the way I do either, it's just something I feel in me.
That being said, things feel as though they are starting to turn around a little bit. And now I find myself thinking about wearing my diamonds again more.

Lately I have only been wearing a plain band. I occasionally wear my small diamond studs, but that's rare. I just got my ering back, and it's not really large enough, esp on my hands, to be obnoxious.

I've already had one wedding set stolen, bec I was so cavalier with thinking no one would ever rob me. But if I have this one stolen, I prob won't replace it.
