What does everyone think of sideways cross pendants? I'm looking to ask for a cross necklace as a present, and I can't decide between a traditional cross or a sideways one. One the one hand, sideways crosses seem trendy to me, and at 32 I want something I can wear 10-20 years from now. On the other, I really love how they don't dangle down. I hate having to fish pendants out of the neck of my shirts. I'm looking for something I can wear everyday. I think I might go with yellow gold or silver because of how well they blend with any outfit, but I kind of love the rose, too. What would you go with?

I have been looking at these lately, and I saved the rose gold and yellow gold to my wish list while I consider them.

While I'm not overly religious, I do like the everyday appeal of these cross necklaces. I like that they won't dangle down into your shirt or blouse, as you mentioned. I also like that they're a modern twist to the cross necklace that my mother and grandmother wear/wore.

You mentioned being worried that these are too "trendy" and that you worry whether or not you'll be able to wear them 20 years from now... I'm 30, also, but I can see a fashionable older woman pulling this off, so I don't think that this fashion would be "too young" for you even 20 years from now! When I worry that a piece is too "trendy" or "young"... in my mind, I just picture Meryl Streep (in her Devil Wears Prada ensemble) sporting this... and it seems to work in my head... so I think you're good! :giggles:

Hmmm.... I like the first one but I would think a while about the significance of it and research what others think (google, ask SA in store, maybe ask a minister) before I bought it.

I recently returned an Indian prayer shawl because I wasn't sure about how people would view it. I just purchased it for the design to use as a scarf, found out later that it was a prayer shawl, then googled prayer shawl and decided not to go there.

Edit: I wonder if it flips over easily. I really like that piece. Do you know how wide the charm is?

I checked a conservative Catholic forum called catholic answers and they didn't have a problem with it. I saw what looked like an evangelical end of times site that didn't like it but they appeared to oppose most/all jewelry and probably makeup as well, there's something in the Bible about the only adornment to be modest attire:

1 Timothy 2:9 says "likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire,"

I think almost no one believes that, not even very religious people so personally I'm not counting that opinion. As far as I can tell there is no agreed upon symbolism for the sideways cross; some people have said it symbolizes Jesus carrying the cross.

vintagefinds, I agree with you on the trendiness of the sideways cross. I'm not sure this would be a piece that you'd wear 10 or 20 years from now, but that's really something that only you will know for sure. If it were me, I'd get a relatively cheap sideways cross necklace (maybe even costume jewelry), and get a classic cross necklace from Tiffany (since those will always be "in").

Although I absolutely love the sideways cross in rose gold, I think that nc. girl has given you good advice.

I own both the traditional cross and recently purchased the sideways cross for when I want to wear a more casual look with jeans and boots.
I love both and choose them differently to go with my outfits and fit the occasion.
If I am very dressed up out for the evening or at work dressed up in a suit, I wear my traditional diamond cross which looks classy and elegant.
When I am dressed down and want to rock a fun look, I wear the sideways cross for a more edgy look with jeans.

I have the Roseark sideways cross, that became popular about 4 or 5 years ago. I really love it, never take it off. I just turned 40, and I am not *yet* feeling like it's too young or too trendy. :)

Let me know if you want a picture of anything.

I was shopping in Nike today and 2 girls working in the store were wearing this design. It looks cool but I am not religious at all so I would never consider wearing a cross.

Thanks for posting this. :smile1:

I think the Tiffany rose gold cross will be on my wish list.
