Ok ladies, here is the situation....

I have .50 ct studs that hubby gave me when we first started going out for one of the first big events in my life. They are H-I colour, and I1. He originally paid $999 in 2005. I know, he didn't get a very good deal. We were still dating, and he just went out on his own and bought them and totally surprised me.

Now, fast forward, I found out the original store will upgrade them if I get something at least double the price. I found a pair of 1.4 ct, I colour, I think, or better, SI2. They are on sale for $2699 - they have a 10% off today, which would make them $2429. I would get the full $999 that hubby paid as a credit towards them, making them only $1430.

Would you upgrade? checked out similar studs on blue nile for $3404. So I guess they are a good deal.

If the earrings you are considering look good, I would upgrade. Then again, I don't believe that diamond earring studs need to meet the same standards as most solitaires because an SI2 simply isn't as noticeable on earrings as it is on a finger. If the diamonds you are looking at sparkle, I think that is an excellent price and I would take them!

Thanks Ladies,

I think I will go back on Monday to get them. I saw the certificate that came with them and it saws they are laser inscribed. I thought that was pretty cool.

I say upgrade! You keep the sentiment, and you add a little size. Win-win!

You are right Hekate... I get to keep the sentiment, because they are a special piece. They were my first diamond jewelry.

Yes, they are very sparkly...you can really notice the difference when you put them beside I1 or I2 studs....

What is the cut grade on them?
At that price the cut may not be great, I'd talk them down for sure. Ideal cut should be closer to $4k.

I think the cut was good to very good.. I looked up the same cut on bluenile, and they would be more there, so I think it's a good deal? I think I'm going to get them on Monday.....

oh, and what do you girls think of the size? They had 2ct there.....or is that too big?

Depends on what you are comfortable with and the size of your ears. I think we need modeling pictures to be really sure. hehe

For me, I tried a few on and found that I like .80 ctw for everyday. But i know a lot of people can wear 1 or 2 carats or even more in each ear and not have a problem. All personal preference and lifestyle.

Here are threads I found on the same question:

ok. will do...the place i'm upgrading at is like the Canadian "Zales"....yes, I know, not the best place to get them, but hubby, at the time, boyfriend didn't know much about jewelry and it was a total surprise....

The new studs will also come with certs....so I think it will be ok. as long as I know what the specs mean, which you girls have made me very informed! :-)
