My SO and I have been searching high and low for an engagement ring, but it seems that we keep striking out. I finally found a ring that I adore (similar to what is pictured), but it's only available in a size 7 and I need a 4.25 or 4.5 (if I leave some room for swelling and what not).

The jeweler said she does not recommend sizing it down due to the stones on the sides but said she would do it if I want her to, but the stones may "pop." I had another jeweler tell me basically the same thing about another similar ring I had tried on and said that some of the stones might have to be removed.

My SO and I both adore the ring, but I don't want it to end up looking all messed up if we choose to size it.

Should we do it anyways or just pass on it?

Do not size. But that can easily be remade by a jeweler. Make sure you find one very adept with the micropave and that uses high quality melee (the tiny diamonds).

Definitely pass. You will ruin the setting if you try to size it down. I think most jewelers would not even do the job because all the stones really would pop out.

I would pass. I would also ask the jeweler if they can design the ring in your size. Maybe they can make the ring in your size? It is worth a try.

that's what i was going to recommend.

i definitely wouldn't size it down, especially since it's a signficant amount and since it was recommended from two different jewelers, but i have to believe they can easily replicate it and make you a new/custom one.

hope it works out for you. it's a gorgeous ring!

Thank you for the advice.

She said that if the stones pop, they'll be reset so the end result would look the same as the original. But I assume I should still pass on it? I never knew sizing it would weaken the setting.

I would absolutely pass. As everyone else has already mentioned, that is a huge jump in size and would absolutely weaken the setting. Everything I've ever heard about something like that is not to do it.

The design is so simple that I guarantee you could find a jeweler to recreate it for you. In fact, I'll bet there is a company out there who makes a ring just like it that you could order in any size you like, so it probably wouldn't even have to be a special order.
