I have always wanted a Dior handbag, as I feel a personal connection to the brand (specifically, the archival pieces since my birthday is the same day as the New Look debut). I have a Bar suit with the slim skirt, but while in Paris, found this little bag I was instantly drawn to. No clasps, no glaring hardware or logo, it felt like a practical and subtle application of the cannage motif. I felt like I could see myself wearing it daily in place of a small black crossbody. I like that it’s a little more fancy, since my style tends to be more casual, edgy, or eclectic.

But I own several bags that serve similar, if not the same, function! And I couldn’t help but notice upon returning to the States how “basic” I felt when I wore it. Like a college sorority girl or something (no offense). It also reminds me of the LV toiletry bag and how some people add a chain to it to wear as a purse. Am I too in my head about this? Does it scream “her first Dior”?

I think the bag looks great on you! I understand what you mean, it does resemble a pouch and isn’t "fully" a bag IMO, similar to the LV Pochette Accessoires. That said, there’s nothing wrong with it not being a full-sized bag. There are plenty of outfits and occasions where these types of bags work perfectly. When I wear my Pochette Accessoires, I don’t expect it to look like a classic flap bag. I grab it when my mood and outfit call for something simple and effortless.

I also think it looks great collection on you, especially with tips fun outfit, but can see it working with many looks. I think this could be a very useful style (concerts, running errands) and have found that I have some WOCs that have gotten much more mileage than many of my regular handbags. My only warning is that Dior can be addictive :giggle:

If you don't love it anymore, or you just are not reaching for it and it's collecting dust, it's fine to sell the odd piece. And yes, someone senior from Hermes told me that once!

However, when you asked if it screams 'her first Dior'?...we should, ideally not care for others opinions. But I know that's easier said than done.

Here's my take: Our bags have an emotional connection to us, in a similar way you mentioned a connection to the brand.

If you wore your full bar suit with the bag would you still feel 'basic?' - let's say you were out for an evening and it was styled as a clutch. Anyone who knows what you are wearing would certainly know that is not basic.

It just so happens it is also a useful bag for so many other things. For example, yes, I have the saddle bag in my profile pic, but I also have a saddle pouch bag, that is frankly more practical, and I use it more, although, yes people may think it's 'basic' - so I completely empathize with you.

So, back to my two first points: It comes down how you really feel about it, do you love it in the way you first saw it in Paris?
Or is it how you perceive people viewing it that is pushing you to dislike it?

To add, there is nothing wrong with a collection of similar bags, as long you enjoy them. :amuse:

Gently - worrying that something is “basic” seems to me to fall within the “sorority girl” stereotype.

I think it is a practical and functional bag, useful for many situations that many would love to have but cannot afford. You seem to have a “more is more” attitude to style so this might be a nice counter part to that or it might not feel like enough for you.

Which brings me to my main point - at the end of the day, what matters is what works for you and what you like. I don’t look at people and think “wow, that’s a basic bag”. I admire style or a smile or an attitude. Even if I recognize that a bag is crafted and not sold as the wearer is using it (which is rare because I just don’t think that deeply about it), then I tend to think “how ingenious, they made it work for them.”

People spend so much time thinking that others are really focused in on the minutia of their appearance and that is really not the case. Unless you are gracing the pages of a style mag - people are just not going to spend that much time on you. So, wear what you love and what makes you joyful because that’s what matters.

I don’t understand the issue with carrying your “first Dior”. I still have my first Dior along with my 5th, 8th, 12th??? … who knows because I’ve lost count of what was bought when and I keep what I love. By your reasoning we would all ditch the first item we buy from a brand. Is your bar suit your first Dior suit? Should it go as well?

Bottom line - confidence yields not caring about others opinions. Sanity means not getting on a selling hamster wheel just to get rid of things we enjoy because of those opinions.

If the bag isn’t working for you then sell it. But, if you are looking for external validation, no bag will make you happy because there will always be a group of people who don’t like your choices and look.

Every time I saw that bag, I also thought it looked similar to other brands’ bags because of the colour, shape and the quilted body. And it is definitely rather basic considering it is a Dior! X
