Should I look for my scarf at an H boutique instead of NM?

DH got me my first H item for Christmas - an H scarf from NM! :yahoo:(Reveal later when I have time to clean up my post-Christmas disaster of a living room and take proper pictures).

Question: Since I hope to one day be able to purchase a Kelly or a Birkin - should I look for a scarf at my local H boutique instead of NM? I am head-over-heels for the scarf DH picked out, but my girlfriend said that if I want to get an H bag, I shouldn't be buying at NM - but at the boutique instead. Since I don't have limitless funds and it will take me a looonnggg time to save for my Hermes bag, I'm worried she might have a point in that buying the scarf at a boutique would help me develop the appropriate relationship with an SA.

TIA everyone!

Agree with your girlfriend given comments from more seasoned TPFers on this forum....but no reason why you can't also buy a coveted carre from NM if H does not have it available.....it seems reasonable to choose H first if they have an item available and you want to buy other harder-to-obtain items from H iin the future.....congrats on your present :smile1:

Thanks spit_fire! I'm not sure if a boutique has the scarf that DH picked up. And since it is my first Hermes item - picked out entirely by DH himself, the sentimental value of exchanging it for something else wouldn't be worth it if a boutique doesn't have it. I'm ~5 years away from being in a position to purchase an H bag, so I wasn't sure if it was too early consider working with an SA for what would likely be a small few number of H items. Right now I'm just mostly learning about the brand.

I've been admiring Hermes for a while and DH *completely* surprised me with a scarf for Christmas. It means a lot that he got my first H item. :-)

Never hurts to establish relationships with SAs and often more than one--and I say that because some will go the extra mile like actually check the computer whereas others won't. Re scarves and where to buy, if I'm at NM, I'll check out the counter but they never seem to have the selection that the boutique does. The boutique has many on display and many more in drawers. I spied an Op H in black and white crepe that was living in the drawer. What a nice find!

Thanks jmen! I just found the scarf DH picked on the H website as of now - so I suspect there is a good chance an H boutique has one/can locate one. It sounds like the logical thing to do would be to purchase the same scarf from a Hermes SA.

Hmm.... I just realized that I'm actually incredibly nervous to go into an H boutique:excl: I'm in Dallas - I hope they are nice and are OK with me looking around a little bit after I buy my scarf.

One reason to purchase at NM is because you can get as much as $50 off for a scarf. You can also easily return/exchange an item; which you won't be able to do in a Hermes store. They do not offer refunds - in most cases only Credit Store. There is no reason why you couldn't play both ways. It does not hurt to have a nice Hermes scarf when walking into that Hermes store of yours .. :cloud9:

Yay! I went and picked up my scarf this afternoon.

I have read a lot about people feeling weird about being in a Hermes boutique, and while I felt like I was in a museum at first - my local H was very welcoming. Nell showed me bracelets, additional scarves and belts. All stunning! We talked about everything from H's beginnings to Benard Anault himself. It was so much fun!

I must say I was so mesmerized by the quality of even the smallest items (the weight of the bracelets, the stitching on the belts), I spent less time looking at the bags than I would have guessed.

I had an amazing experience and very glad I decided to make the trip. I look forward to visiting again with DH. :presents
