Should I get this rolex?

I am currently considering purchasing another rolex. Is the 26mm and the 29mm too similar, should I consider the 34mm instead, or even branch out to another brand?


I currently have a two tone Rolex Oyster Perpetual Lady Datejust which was purchased about 11 years ago. It is 26mm in diameter with stainless steel case, 18K yellow gold fluted bezel, silver Jubilee dial, diamond hour markers, stainless steel and 18K yellow gold Oyster bracelet. I am currently interested in purchasing a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust Masterpiece Pearlmaster. It is 29mm in diameter with 18K white gold case, bezel set with 12 diamonds, white mother of pearl dial, diamond hour markers and pearlmaster bracelet.


The pros on the 29mm:
1. I fell in love with this watch the first time I saw someone wearing it and have been dreaming of owning one for a while
2. Its style is very classic which I can wear for a very long, long time.
3. Although it is slightly larger than the current one I own (26mm) yet I can still distinguish the different in size
4. It’s one color (18k white gold) instead of two tone (18k yellow gold with stainless steel) which creates a completely different look (imo)
5. Rolex has better retained value than most other brands
6. I tried on both the 29mm and the 34mm, I personally like the 29mm on me since I have a pretty small wrist (5.5”)
7. The 29mm seems more feminine than the 34mm (again, imo) and my style is very feminine and I am pretty petite (5’5”, 112lbs)


The pros on the 34mm:


1. It’s very popular and stylish with the celebrities (big watches are “in”)
2. It creates a substantial difference in looks (from the bezel wise) from the current one I have (26mm vs. 34mm) so people will notice I am wearing a different watch even far away


The cons on the 34mm:


1. It’s very popular and stylish now but I am afraid it’s only a trend which might fade
2. It costs a few thousands more than the 29mm (which I can use toward another watch - a Chopard Happy Sports or a cartier, new purses, shoes, clothes, etc…)
3. It won’t look “right” on me to wear a “Big” watch when I am older (in 60s, 70s, or 80s) (again, only imho)


I guess my ultimate question is whether the 26mm and the 29mm are too similar to a point where people might think I am just wearing the same watch (if so, there’s no point in purchasing another rolex since it will be a very significant purchase for me). I got this notion because when I went and tried on the watch (the 29mm), my sister whom accompanied me stated that my 26mm and the 29mm looked the same, she also stated that I should either get the 34mm or branch out to different brand.


All the rolex experts (or non) out there, please help. Thanks a million!!

Hi again. After reading your post a few times, I'm sensing you really want the 29 mm which is an absolutely stunning watch. I feel you will regret the 34 mm. Don't worry about your sister's opinion! You have to get what you love. Just curious if you don't mind me asking - are you under or over 30 years old? And is it a big sister or little sister? The rolexes are all gorgeous and you can't go wrong but I think you would be happier with the 29 mm. JMO!

That's exactly what I thought. 31 mm is the perfect size as it can be feminine or sporty depends on what type of clothes you are wearing.

I wouldn't go with 26 mm again just because you already have one...plus, it's hard to read time in my opinion. I won't go with 34 mm because the watch can get heavy & it can bump into things.

Hi Hokaplan, I am in my mid 30s and my sister is in her early 40s. So while I think I might be able to carry or pull off the 34mm for a while. I seriously don't think it will look "right" on me when I am in my 50s (no offense to anyone, I would be thrilled to see if ladies in their 80s can still pull off the 34mm).

Hi Kristie, I would love a 31mm. However, the masterpiece pearlmaster only comes in 29mm and 34mm and I have pretty much set my mind on the masterpiece pearlmaster. Imagine if there's a 31mm mastpiece pearlmaster, all my problems would be solved.

Hi HappyAngel, like previously stated, I wish the masterpiece pearlmaster comes in 31mm. However, the only ones I can choose are between the 29mm and 34mm. I currently have a 26mm. I believe the 29mm ad 34mm are both heavy since they are both solid 18k white gold (I have tried both on) and I agree with you, the 34mm would bump into things quite easily.

I still think you would be the happiest with the 29 mm. Although I'm 45 and have a 33 mm j12 and a 38 mm j12 and I will definitely be wearing them in my 50s!

I've written this post a couple of times - I think i finally know what I am going to say:

I don't think the watches look too similar. The contrast vs. the single tone strike different notes in my mind.

But if you have questions about which watch, and have no intention of selling it, I would go to a watch store or a jewelry store with a wide variety of watches and try as many of them on as possible. See if there is something you fall completely in love with - Maybe there is a Vacheron Constantine or a IWC out there with your name on it.

Life is too short to waste your time with something you don't love.
