i've read through several threads about shopping in paris so now i think i confused myself...i decided to just post this question and get straight advise from everyone:

i'd like to buy a jypsyiere bag or a birkin and i'm going to paris in feb - would it be cheaper for me to buy in paris (with the 10% VAT refund) or here in the US (my sales tax is 7%)?

TIA!

It will be approximately 20% cheaper, not including your sales tax, so approximately 27% less in Paris, including the VAT refund. You may want to check and see if your cc company charges a "foreign transaction" fee, which can often be 2-4%.

40 Birkin at FSH is 6200 EU = $8880 (at current exchange rates) - 10% VAT = $7992 USD

40 Birkin in US is $9850 + 7% sales tax = $10,539 USD

25% less at FSH, give or take, depending on the actual item and price.

thanks nyyparis --- i'll see if i will be able to do that (if i don't find any that i like)..i'm just worried about the new shipping policy i read in another thread -- if hermes won't ship if over 5k, that would be a problem for me...i did hear that jypsys abound in fsh so if birkin is not meant to be, i'll be very happy with a jypsy :smile1:

You are very welcome Nancy. The shipping policy, as far as I know, does not apply to FSH. I have a friend in the process of paying for a bag that will be shipped soon that is over the limit.

Castorny, will you let us know whether your friend is charged taxes when his/her bag arrives in the US? And whether it is still cheaper to order at FSH and have the item shipped to the US?

Based on my research, it seems that you'll need to pay 9% duty. So the difference is not 25%, but rather 16%.:smile1:

Hermes only ships with the actual declared value, so customs will always have to be paid if you have Hermes ship the bag to the US.

Whether you declare the bag or not when you re-enter the US carrying it, is between you and US Customs.

thanks caffeine - frankly, any percentage off will be much appreciated by my wallet....specially with the price increase coming, i'm hoping to save as much as i can...even if i wanted to, i won't be able to buy before the increase (my h fund won't be adequate until feb) so i'll have to be patient...and since i'll be in paris anyway....

Is it easy to place a podium order? I've posted this on another thread but haven't seen a response.

I was thinking of doing the same thing in FSH. I was really hoping to be able to place an order for a Birkin 30 Etoupe PWH if I don't see it there - that would take the stress out of the whole process for me rather than checking in London and Florence as I'm passing through.

nyyparis or anyone else - is it easy to place a PO? Or do you have to be invited to place this order?

TIA

It's not impossible to place a PO, though you have to note that not everyone is successful, again down to luck. You can try asking the SA if it's possible. GL!
