Shortening a chain strap? Is it possible?

I love the look of some chain wallets and chain mini bags that are meant to be worn crossbody, but the chain straps are almost always too long to look good on me (I'm 5'4"). Has anyone managed to get a chain strap shortened and if so, how/where did you take it? I figure it isn't a job for a cobbler. Is there someone else that can remove some of the links, for example?

Thanks!

I had my DH shorten the chain strap on one of my Michael Kors crossbody bags. He was able to remove several of the links and now it doesn't hang oddly like it did before.
He gently opened the links and removed enough to really make a difference.

It shouldn't be that hard to do depending on the brand of bag.
