Hi everyone. I new here but have been loving going through the forum looking at everyone's beautiful jewels and learning a lot along the way.
I'd like to share this remarkable ring my boyfriend has given me. I've had it for a few weeks even though he said it's part of my Christmas gift. I was keeping it aside for Christmas but today decided 'what the heck, you only live once and life is short' so will start wearing it now!
It's an heirloom Ceylon Sapphire ring. My boyfriend's Great Aunt bought it in Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka) in January 1920 while she was on a year long trip around the world with her Mother and Brother (my BFs Grandpa). At some point I might get it appraised but for now I've taken some fairly precise measurements and believe it to be in the 6.5 -7.6 carat range (I've learned sapphires are denser than diamonds so a 7 carat sapphire will look smaller than a 7 carat diamond).
For the first few weeks that I've had it, I thought I was going color blind lol. The night my boyfriend showed it to me I mentioned that it looked purple but the next morning I looked at it and wondered how I could have ever though it was purple when it was clearly blue. But then the cycle would repeat and I'd flip flop between whether I thought it was blue or purple, wondering if I was going crazy
. Turns out, I'm not. I didn't realize there was such a thing as color change Sapphires!!' So yes, I was right, it's blue AND it's purple depending on the light source. I just figured that out yesterday! Here are some photos. The first in natural daylight, the second in incandescent lighting (standing in the kitchen after sundown) and the last in candlelight where it turns a soft lilac color.
So I'm loving my 95 year old ring and wanted to share with other people who appreciate such things!! Thanks for reading
