I'm thinking of selling some rings that I don't wear anymore. (and if I'm in the wrong board, will a mod move this or tell me where to go?) Do you think there is a market for these things? Do I get an appraisal before selling? I have original purchase paperwork for some of the rings.

I would get an appraisal but only if it is worth the money, it may not be. Maybe just do some internet research ! Some stones have become more rare or are more rare than you think, I think ! Please post pics, I would love to see !

Hi No Cute! I think it depends on what you've got. If they are very common gemstones that weren't a ton of money to begin with, you might be better to scrap the gold w/ the metal prices. The problem is that second hand jewelry usually doesn't turn much for profit in the majority of cases. Do you have a local jeweler you use? Maybe they will be willing to buy them back from you?

Hey, Elizat! Thank you both.

I think I will take them to the jeweler and see what an appraisal costs (I have one ring worth the appraisal), if it's worth it for the amethyst and aquamarine rings, which I doubt. The local consignment shop might be interested. I can't recall what I paid for them, and I couldn't find the receipts, though I did for the one diamond ring. I will say, based on the single days with a better income, under 500, possibly under 300, but I remember liking them a lot and not caring if they were expensive or not. Ugh...wish I could remember, then I could guess what percentage to sell for. The diamond ring was 1500, so I know I'll only get about 300.

Mrs. McC: both are oval cut (my fav) with diamonds, the amethyst has three little diamonds on top and three below. The aqua is surrounded.

they sound beautiful !

They sound really pretty! I'm kind of similar. I used to love blue topaz and still do really like it, but have maybe 3 rings in it. None were super expensive but I just liked them. I've always liked aqua but it is so hard to find one with good color that doesn't look clear.

What about listing on Bonanzle or ebay? Or, you could try Craigslist too, but some of the buyers may not be all the reliable there.

Funny you should say Bonanzle. I was writing a description for the amethyst last night, and it posted but I cannot get decent pic. So I'll surely have to sell locally.

I like blue topaz too. Actually, I prefer the semiprecious (locally mined if possible) gems to diamonds. I know, call me crazy :roflmfao: But I am ditching everything I can in order to avoid the clutter bug that is threatening my mental stability ;). MIL's house freaked me out so much this weekend that even tiny rings I don't wear seem a waste to have around.

^ I'm with you. I think diamonds are beautiful of course, but I actually love the colors of precious and semi precious stones. Topaz has such fun colors. My favorites are probably sapphire and emeralds. I think yellow diamonds are amazing and kind of an exception to the general rule for me though.

Topaz is so neat. And tourmaline is can be so varied.

Yes, diamonds are goreous, definitely, but the colors...yum. Emeralds are beautiful. I wouldn't part with my aquamarine from back in the day and would resize it, but dh got me a giant aqua for an engagement ring (at my request, and it still confuses him...lol).

^ That is so fun! Do you have pictures? If I ever find *that* guy and actually want an e-ring I would want an emerald I think. There is a company doing cultured emeralds that are really amazing in color that are very reasonable b/c they are cultured. I've toyed w/ buying one!

I wouldn't mind a cultured (instead of natural mined) emerald b/c of the color and price point in an e-ring. You can always upgrade later, right?;) I really like a lot of the diamond substitutes out there too, like moissanite or some of the Asha stones.

Cultured would possibly be stronger? Maybe? I wore my aquamarine every day until the jeweler (had regular inspection) found a chip and had to repair it with resin. Such a bummer, but the super high setting (exactly why I wanted the ring to be set low or even had the stone embedded) it got messed up. Seldom wear it anymore. Sigh....sniff.

That is too bad about your ring! High settings can do that sometimes. I notice I beat up rings more w/ a high setting. I like low settings for a lot of reasons.

W/ the cultured ones, they are the same, just grown in the lab (not lab created though). Emeralds are pretty tough- I think an 8 on the hardness scale. I don't think the company was able to mess w/ that though.

Here's the link to the company:
