Dear TPF members,

I do not know if this has been brought up. But I am planning on buying a second hand Hermes watch. Will Hermes fix or maintain the watch if i were to bring it in? Thank you.

Which Hermes watch are you planning to buy second-hand? If it's a battery-operated mechanism, you probably could take it to any reputable jeweler for a battery change. I'm not sure what other service this watch might need. I have an Hermes H-Heure watch that I bought new 20 years ago from a local jeweler who sells Hermes watches. This is considered a fashion watch and all it's ever needed is the occasional battery change. I also have a Cartier mechanical (hand-wound) watch that I think of as "real" watch. I bought it new from another local jeweler who sells Cartier watches and other fine timepieces. Every few years the local jeweler sends it back to Cartier for a "spa" treatment. I mention this because the Hermes watch you are considering might be able to be serviced your local jeweler.

Thank you for your response.

It is a mechanical watch and i am sure there is nothing wrong with it. But for future purposes i will have to take it in to get serviced by hermes as i would rather they handle it if there are any complications that a reputable service may not be able to fix.

I am just wanting to hear from other TPFs if they have bought a second hand watch from an AD and taken it in with no issues because most watches have ties to the original person who bought the watch and so they will see that in their record.

Thanks

Is there a warranty with H watches?

Once you are outside the warranty period, I don't really see the benefit of getting the AD to service it, assuming you can find a good independent watch maker.

From my experience dealing with Rolex, I don't even think you should need servicing within the warranty period.

We don't service our watches regularly, despite some owners that like regular servicing. I take them in when it acts up. However, we do have a few that we wear on rotation, so there is not a lot of wrist time in any one particular watch. For Rolex that starts from CDN$1000 per service, I am in no hurry.

True! Thank you for your feedback.

I just want to be able to take the watch in for service in the future with no hassles. Especially i am not the original owner and do not want to be troubled by hermes not wanting to service the watch.

I doubt H would mind you are not the original owner.

They should be happy you are giving them your business.
