Saint Laurent Betty leather

Hello all,

I have a dilemma (more like First World problem...)

I have the Saint Laurent continental wallet that I purchased maybe a few months ago? I am extremely gentle with it, but I find that the leather scratches so easily! I'm so frustrated with the leather, as it seemed like it WOULDN'T get damaged so easily, but I feel as if I discover new scratches across the surface every time I pull it out! I'm lusting over the mini Betty bag, but it seems like they used the same leather for it. Now, I can't test my theory out without being forced to buy the bag afterward (haha) but does anyone own the Betty? Do you find that the leather scratches easily? Thanks!

I have this wallet and I have the exact same problem. I bought it maybe a month ago, and it's already DESTROYED just from normal everyday use. I'm quiet upset, as I expect a wallet to last at least 5+ years (just said goodbye to a leather Prada circa 2007).

I'm thinking of going to the boutique this weekend to see if I can exchange it for something in a different leather. They have a pretty tight exchange policy, but I find it unacceptable that something that costs upwards of $600 can be destroyed in a month with normal use. This is a nightmare, albeit a first world one

Oh wow. That is a problem. You pay premium prices for a product that you expect will last a long time but ends up disappointing you. I suggest going to the store if they can advise something, a cream perhaps. But those look so deep that it must be restored. My Celine box has pretty sensitive leather but not like this. It just develops a patina over time. But this is unacceptable. Further proves my decision to veer away from slp since the designer changed.

oh wow - that looks bad. you have to go back to the store, this is unacceptable. is that the same leather they use for their other bags, the Sac de Jour?

as for the Betty - I bought the mini Betty but in suede, so I am sorry I can't help with the leather question, however I can suggest to buy the suede and just use it carefully. i used mine for air travel as cross body and it came out great (just had to keep my kids' fingers as far away as possible..)

I have two smooth leather Betty bags and one textured leather Betty. The smooth ones are slightly more prone to scratches than the textured one, although not as much as "I can't wear the bag because it scratches." I do not wear either one as an everyday bag, but when I do wear them I do not really baby them. hope this helps.

oh wow! Sorry about the damage to your wallet. I have much cheaper leather wallets that hardly show any wear at all.

Were you able to visit a YSL store and discuss the issue? What happened?

I went to the SLP store in Soho last weekend and the whole experience was beyond frustrating. I described the issue to an SA who gave me a blank look and said "well, the leather is really delicate." I could tell she was useless, so I asked for the manager, who pretty much said the same thing but then finally offered to send my wallet to their leather spa for treatment but told me that it wouldn't really fix the deep scratches. I was very calm and polite but in no mood to back down so he finally gave me the contact information of someone at their corporate HQ to have a further discussion. Too busy at work this week, I'm going to call next week and see what happens. He also told me that usually they warn customers about this leather when purchasing (no one said a word to me about this in my shopping experience), so basically I give their whole customer experience a big fat zero.

I asked if this is the same leather that they use for the new bags and he said that originally it was but they did end up switching to a tougher leather due to issues just like this. Clearly, they know it's a problem and I'm sure that I'm not the first person to come in with this same issue. I should have the wallet back in 1-2 weeks (I'd be shocked if it was less than a month... they really seemed to be in no mood to help me at that store) so it'll be an ongoing saga. They actually had the nerve to tell me that some customers carry the wallet in the duster bag, which I'm sorry is just ludicrous (which I said).

Bottom line, I will NEVER shop at SLP ever again, and I've also learned (the hard way) to always shop at department stores, with the exception of Prada and Miu Miu, whose customer service is always amazing in their stores. Very disappointing all around.

So I have an update... I just got a call back from SLP (after calling this week to ask why my 2 week repair has taken so long) and finally, 2 months later, my wallet is back from the leather spa. The store manager told me that the wallet still has visible scratching but because the repair took so long, they are going to give me a replacement.

I have a feeling that I'm going to keep having the same issue with the leather, but I do think it is a nice gesture by the store to give me a brand new wallet. I still refuse to carry it in a dust bag under any circumstance!
