I have never used the outside pockets for anything, because they are too stiff and curved around the sides of the bag. I have an EW top zip tote. The ineterior does have enough pockets for me, so it's not an issue.

I've tried using the outside pockets for my keys, but when I push my hand into them, it's a tight squeeze and it feels like it's going to take my skin off. They're very stiff with almost no give so they're not very practical. You might be able to stick papers or something similar into them, so that they are protruding and you don't need to push your hand into the pocket. I wasn't comfortable having my keys sticking out over the top, so I'm currently not using those pockets for anything.
