Hello fellow TPF friends,

I have searched this forum far and wide… and I haven’t seen any thread about the sac à pansage.
I have a very urban, subway, public transport lifestyle. I am looking for a very easy to wear, easy to carry toile bag (lightweight, easy to maintain and worry free for rainy days).
I want something very well made (saddle stitching, looking at you 🤓) and I have stumbled on the sac a pansage. I know it is technically not hermes but hermes sellier. For me it is like petit H… same company other division.

Now fellow online friends … who has this bag, who is in love, who hates it?
What other incredible model (none HAC, non Kelly) do you have in mind which could va an alternative ?

Thanks for everyone who can help.

DH wears the evelyne sellier 33. He has both noir and gold in smooth hunter leather. The noir is pretty battered, but we like that. Pretty under the radar. And, perhaps he shouldn’t, but he does wear it in all weather. So far, it wipes off, no issues.

ETA: barenia is easy to maintain in that it handles rain and snow. Just don’t get oil or hand sanitizer on it.

It is from an equestrian life, but it’s all regular Hermes.

What are you looking to carry? A laptop? Something else bulky? What’s your budget?

This would va my equivalent of a large tote bag for me.
- daily essentials
- stuff I buy on the go (box of sweets, some light groceries…)
- something that could eventually serve aswell as a sports bag.

Budget is not a criteria, well made and discretion is.

Thanks for your help!

The huge printed "Hermès/Sellier/Paris" definitely doesn't scream discretion; it just screams "this is a Hermès bag btw!" I have only ever seen it in stores, and I think it looks bulky. This makes sense since its intended purpose is to lug around grooming tools. I personally do not think it is a beautiful enough bag to use outside a stable.

For me that is the same thing than the Evelyne… it depends which side you wear it. But thank you for your point of vieuw! It helps to hear everyone’s opinion!

It is perhaps that very laid back almost sports style which draws me to it.

If you have any recommendations or otherideas please share.

Thank you so much

I think the Cabasellier might be a good alternative. It is lightweight, it has stitching, and Clemence leather is quite robust and easy in my experience. Going the second hand route, I also like the Maxi Cabas Box. It comes with pockets inside and is lined in canvas so it is light. Unlike the Cabasellier, it will be more rigid. Back on the resale market, I like the double sens, but it has no pockets and will fit in less. Overall, Hermès has made plenty of other over the shoulder and hand held Cabas bags that are much more discrete and are in their beautiful leather.

If you want the shoulder strap and the two handles, a large bolide might be the way to go in terms of space. A large plume with a strap you can add would also be lightweight and discrete.

Overall, for the price of their horse grooming bag, I think you can get a really nice older model on the resale market.

Also, you could always try the grooming bag by getting a no brand grooming bag for a couple weeks. They seem to sell around 30 euros and will give you a feel for the bag type and utility.

thank you so much for this reply…

You make some good suggestions here…
- maxi cabas box is a great alternative IMO
- plume and bolide I like very very much… perhaps in very large … but I am afraid taking them in XXL they wil be super heavy. That is something I can talk to …

The idea of buying a cheap sac de pansage is a great one!! Thanks

Some options for you would be:
  • A Victoria in a larger size
  • A Double Sens (I see really good deals on the reseller market). They come in really large sizes.
  • A larger Evelyne
  • A Herbag (a pain to get in and out of though)

A Garden Party is a spacious tote, but the handles are short (there was a version with long handles a while back, but it’s very hard to find).

There are some backpacks like Hac a Dos.

If your gym stuff includes shoes, you are looking at a large Birkin or a HAC, which you said you don’t want. There are some duffels Hermes made over the years that you may look into. My Evelyne 29 fits a pair of women’s dancing shoes comfortable, so maybe a 33 can fit men’s running shoes.

You can poke around places likes The Real Real and Vestiaire Collective, sometimes they are vintage bags in less common that may be what you want.

I actually own a few of the regular sac de passage for, you know, pansage’ing my horse. I have never seen one that can pass for a bag (other than the Hermes one), and I own some higher-end ones. They are decidedly not stylish. They are also made of pretty tough material that is great for withstanding abuse, but is not great to the touch. I would rather buy an amazing Lululemon bag than use one of those.

Thank you for your kind message. I truly appreciated the time you spend my quest for a good gym/ commute/ work bag.

I also searched for another sac de pansage (to test the waters) and found they can not pass for a bag aswel. They look truely there purpose.

The double sens was my SA suggestion when I asked her. The thing is I can not see myself with it.

Thank you for your help!
