Actor Ryan O'Neal was arrested in his Malibu home on assault and firearms charges after a fight with his 42-year-old son Griffin, police said Sunday.

Sheriff's deputies and paramedics went to his house at 12:30 a.m. Saturday responding to a call about a suspected battery, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. John Benedict.

"Deputies determined that Mr. Griffin O'Neal was assaulted by his father during a family dispute," said Benedict.

No details of the dispute were released, and no injuries were immediately reported. The arrest was first reported by TMZ

The fight came just a day after the family received good news: On Friday, actress Farrah Fawcett, who was the longtime girlfriend of Ryan O'Neal and the mother of Griffin's half-brother Redmond, announced she was cancer free after a fight with anal cancer.

The elder O'Neal, 65, was booked at the Malibu-Lost Hills sheriff's station on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm, said Benedict.

O'Neal was released at 5:30 a.m. Saturday after posting $50,000 bond.
  2. Sheriff sources tell TMZ that a 22-year-old female friend of Griffin's was "inadvertently" injured at the scene and transported to a local hospital. Sources wouldn't confirm that the injury was a result of the gunshot.

Joanna Moore, is also no stranger to the law. The 42-year-old spent 18 days in jail for not performing the community service ordered by a judge who found him guilty of reckless boating in a 1986 accident that killed the son of film director Francis Ford Coppola.

Griffin also has a history of substance abuse. He pleaded no contest to a drunken driving charge in 1989. In 1992, he agreed to spend one year in a live-in drug rehabilitation program after pleading no contest to charges he shot at his estranged girlfriend's unoccupied car.
  3. well the victim sounds like a real winner.
  4. Aren't they a little old to be doing this?!
Come on O'Neals, go get yourself some professional help.

  11. Turning 60 and being given a clean bill of health after battling cancer meant Farrah Fawcett had plenty to celebrate.
Which is why it was probably a mistake to let her boyfriend Ryan O’Neal host the party.

The actor known for his explosive temper was accused of firing a gun and assaulting his son Griffin, 42, after a family celebration at his Malibu mansion.
O’Neal, 65, was held on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm.

He is thought to have been waving the gun around when it accidentally went off in the early hours of Saturday.
Griffin, also an actor, was unhurt, but his 22-year-old girlfriend, Joanne Berry, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The row shows it is business as usual in one of Hollywood’s most dysfunctional families.

Griffin and his father, both said to have battled drug problems, have a fraught relationship.
At 14, Griffin is said to have had his teeth knocked out in a brawl with O’Neal.
Friday’s party was supposed to have been a joyous affair to mark Miss Fawcett’s recovery from cancer as well as her landmark birthday.
Police were called after reports of a domestic dispute involving O’Neal, who rekindled his romance with Miss Fawcett when she discovered she was seriously ill.

It wasn’t clear yesterday whether she was in the house at the time of the alleged assault.
Lieutenant John Benedict, from Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, confirmed: "Deputies determined that Griffin O’Neal had been assaulted by his father." He said Ryan O’Neal was not believed to have been under the influence of drink or drugs.
  12. WTF goes on out there in Malibu??

IMO Ryan O Neal is an ignoranus: stupid and an *******. Sound like the description applies to his son also.
  13. To make it worse I read this morning that Griffin's girlfriend is pregnant. She was treated and released from the hospital but Ryan has got serious anger issues.

I remember when Ryan knocked Griffin's teeth out and I know Griffin has has been arrested numerous times and treated for substance abuse many times as well. I have no idea but hopefully he is drug free now.

On the whole I think Ryan is one of those people who should never have had children. They have all had problems with drugs. Peggy
  14. Ryan is claiming self defense.

The actor told the Los Angeles Times that he arrived at his Malibu home Saturday night after celebrating with a group of friends, including his former girlfriend Farrah Fawcett. They had been celebrating Fawcett's 60th birthday and that she is cancer-free after four months of treatment.

O'Neal's son Griffin, 42, who has a history of alcohol and drug problems, was visiting the Malibu house. O'Neal said Griffin grabbed a fireplace poker and started swinging it, grazing him four or five times.
He "aimed at my head, I ducked, he hit his own girlfriend in the head," O'Neal, 65, told the newspaper.
"I got a little nervous at that point and fled to my room ... and I got my gun," he said.
O'Neal said his son began to come up the stairs with the poker. "So I just fired it into the banister, and that scared him and he fled," he said.
The father and son have clashed before. In 1983, police were called to their home after a fight in which O'Neal knocked out two of Griffin's teeth, the Times reported. No charges were filed.
Sheriff's deputies arrested O'Neal for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm. He was released on a $50,000 bond.
Griffin O'Neal's pregnant girlfriend was slightly injured, treated at a hospital and released, said Neil Hassman, Ryan O'Neal's manager.
Sheriff's deputies and Hassman couldn't provide details on what caused the dispute.
"I've spoken to people involved and no one knows why it escalated like that," Hassman told The Associated Press on Monday. "Ryan feels terrible about what happened."
Griffin O'Neal could not be reached for comment; there was no listing for his phone number
  15. We know nothing that really happened. But if the son did try to hurt his dad first, he sounds like a dropkick.
