I finally, finally pulled the trigger on a vintage Rolex that I have been eyeballing for literally months. Got some solid advice from a few impartial experts (and some lovely TPFers) and did the whole offer-counteroffer thing this afternoon. I paid more than the experts said it was worth, by about $700, but hell, it's a beauty, I'm in love with it and $700 extra was an amount I was willing to pay over the assumed market worth to get my hands on it.

It is believed to be from the 40's, 14k, and has a (possibly refinished) dial in pink gold (something I took into account when making an offer). Apparently it is uncommon but not officially rare. It's also a men's watch with a large face - for whatever reason, I prefer men's watches for this reason (the big faces) and I also like simple, non-sporty designs. I may or may not keep the croc leather strap, we will see.

Does anyone else here own or covet a vintage Rolex? Or any other vintage watch? Am I alone in my love? I would love to see photos if anyone has any.

Without further adieu, my gorgeous new (to me anyway) baby:

WOW! That is TO DIE FOR. I don't own a rolex of any kind, but I would like a Vintage someday. I never wear the watch I have...so I'd feel bad buying one of these!

I wouldn't worry about the price, this doesn't look like a piece that you'd find again easily.

This is EXACTLY what I told myself. :D It was the pink gold face that did it for me with this one. The colour is so great.

Ame - I actually haven't worn a watch habitually since I was about 6 and got a Swatch for my birthday. And I'm going to be all paranoid and protective of this one, too.

Have you checked out vintage Rolex styles? I really love the Cellini style(s) - again, very simple faces. I generally don't go for minimalism as a look but for some items - especially pricey or big brands - I think that somehow minimalist styling makes it nicer in my mind. I'm really not a fan of the blingy/sporty Rolexes. eBay has a lot of vintage listings if you just want to browse and see the kind of watches that are out there.

wow its gorgeous!! I dont like the look of modern watches, but i love the classic sophistication of a vintage mens watch on a women. I wear something similar (mens watch) but with a diamond pave dial and I get tonnes of compliments on it!!

we need wrist shots :D

this is absolutely stunning! excellent choice. i love vintage watches and jewelry, so for me, you can't go wrong.

it's literally timeless....

i feel the same way about watches. anything with diamonds and too much bling (for my watch only) is just OTT—for me personally, it's just not my style. i love the simplicity and elegance of a nice vintage men's watch. you can't go wrong. beautiful piece.
