Watch experts, I need your help please!

I have a Rolex, a plain stainless style with a white dial, Roman numerals, and a Jubilee bracelet. I have been toying with the idea of giving this watch to my daughter when she graduates from college, which would be in 2014 if she stays on schedule.

I have had it for 2-3 years and have never had it serviced as it has had no problems so far. If I definitely decide to give it to her, I feel that I should stop wearing it so that it will be in a good condition for her gift.

But is it better for an automatic watch to be worn rather than stored? And if I store it, should I have it serviced before that, or wait until it is almost time to give it to her?

^^ Thank you. I am concerned about letting it sit, unwound. But the ones in jewelry stores are idle, not wound, right? I think getting it serviced before I give it to her would be the sensible thing to do.

I have several automatic watches and have been told by the jewelry stores where they were purchased that it is better for the watch to be used every now and then rather than stored for a long period of time (even if it means to just take them out every few months and move them to get them started again).

I love watches and have more than a few, consequently mine often sit for months at a time. I did run into a problem with a beautiful automatic Franck Muller watch that I didn't wear for about a year (crazy I know) and it did not work when I went to wear it again. It was only 3 years old at the time. I had a complete service done which fixed it, but cost about $600.

So my advice would be if you are going to store it, to service it right before you give it to her.
