Everyone on this site is so informed and helpful I am hoping you can help me with my question. I have been contemplating getting a Rolex (Datejust 31 in Stainless Steel), I like the excellent quality, timelessness and look of their watches.

I am a little concerned about the automatic movement. Specifically I am concerned that if I don't wear the watch daily, that in the long run it may drive me crazy that after not wearing the watch I will have to wind it and set the time every time I put it on. I know I can purchase a watch winder but have read varying things about their quality.

Can anyone give me some advice on this particular aspect of owning a Rolex?

Your advice would be most appreciated:smile1:

I have owned 3 Rolexes and honestly have to set them regularly for the time to be accurate. I actually never take my current Rolex off and it runs fast and has to be reset at least once a month. My Chanel watch kept much better time. If you don't want to reset your watch I would probably look for something else. That being said, I do love my Rolex!

Mind you, it's not just the time, it's also the date!

Especially setting the day. You have to be careful when choosing the date because it can be am or pm. So I set the date first and then set the time. If it's pm, I have to whirlwind the time twice so the date would change correctly at midnight.

Drives me crazy.

It's the only thing that I dislike about my Rolex! I would like to wear it all the time but I worry about the diamonds in the strap,so I only wear it on evenings out & at weekends.

Rolex are such beauties and they keep their value. Its definetly worth the hassel of the winding. Once u get ur first rolex, u will need more! Hihihi!

You could either invest in a high quality winder such as a Swiss Kubik or choose another watch from a brand that has a 8+ day power reserve or possibly a quartz watch.

An automatic watch will always be a lot less accurate than a quartz. The reasoning behind the purchase is much more emotional than rational.

It's a pain- I've had mine since 1988-has to be repaired every 3 to 5 years. Took mine in yesterday - will cost $ 850.00 plus another $ 200.00 for a new crystal as mine chipped. Have so much invested in this thing haven't wanted to buy another.

Thanks for all the replies. It is very helpful to learn about your experiences.

I really need to think about this as I am not sure if I should buy the watch. I am going to look into some watch winders to see if this would resolve some of it for me. I typically like low maintenance things.

Thanks again.

I've had my Rolex for 8 years, my daily watch, and have not experienced any problems or need to service it. Only time I need to reset time and date is when I don't wear it for couple of days which is typical for automatic watches. I would never go back to a battery operated watch. Since you are unsure, definitely compare with other similar quality watches.
