I bought a sapphire / diamond ring while in Germany. It is supposed to be from 1910. Can anyone tell me what could have caused the abrasion on the front and if it's repairable.

Wear and tear would cause the Sapphire abrasions. I had my own sapphire ring dismantled, with its gemstones re-polished and reset in new claws. I’d go to a jeweller who sells a lot of quality gemstones and get their advice :flowers:
I intend to when I get back to the US but I was debating returning it. I really like how it looks but worried the whole thing will need to be rebuilt when I get back. I also like that it is older

I think it cost around £300 to have my sapphire ring fixed, it looks as good as new now. I suspect that your sapphire will need to be removed and polished, this will certainly improve its appearance although it might reduce its overall size a little. I’m glad that I did, but then I have a sentimental attachment.

I think when you buy stones that have survived many years (some cases hundreds of years), the abrasions (as long as not too severe) add a bit of character to the piece. You will find you can get such competitive pricing on antique stones, however the risk is they may have some wear and tear. As mentioned however you can get the stone re polished to remove the marks and if they are simply surface abrasions you may not loose too much of the stone. I personally feel i would keep the piece as original as possible as it is a very nice sapphire ring.
