I am turning to tPF for shopping advice AGAIN! :D

My dad is looking for a ring to buy my mom for Christmas. She no longer wears her wedding set because the gold is getting thin and she is afraid to have it re-done or messed with in any way. They have been married for almost 30 years. It was a small inexpensive set but means the world to her and she doesn't want a new one.

However, she does want a ring of some kind. She would be happy with a $10 fake ring from eBay, but my dad wants to get her something nice. Even though they have plenty of cash on hand and even more in investments, he doesn't want to spend more than a couple of hundred. We found a nice anniversary band for $250 at a jewelry store, but he doesn't really want to spend even that much! I'm trying to convince him to go with the ring at the jewelry store (very pretty and simple but sparkly and beautiful!).

In the meantime I thought I would ask for advice here...

hmmm thats hard, unless hes willing to go with silver and possibly something like cz or a gemstone such as amethyst or topaz?, thats a touch call because with the price of gold right now anything in gold is going to be 200 or more most definitley

The girl at the store said it was 1/2 total carats, 14K gold. I looked at the exact same ring at a different store and it was $499. Now I am wondering if the jeweler could have been wrong about something...I sure hope not.

I went back to the store and the girl was wrong. :( She misread the price tag. It was handwritten and was 8-something rather than 3-something. Still a great deal, but more than my dad wanted to pay.

They did have a really pretty 1/4 carat semi-eternity ring in 10K white gold (still looks the same-right? and more durable?). The only visible difference to my uneducated eye was the tiny engraving detail around the top of the ring. Very pretty though. Obviously the diamond weight was different, but I could not tell a visible difference just looking at them together. It ended up being $220 with a lifetime diamond bond. He opted for the lifetime protection.

She will be thrilled when she sees it! It wouldn't matter if it was two hundred or two hundred THOUSAND she will love it just the same.
